Cipriani available for World Cup
Backup first-five Danny Cipriani remains in contention for a place in England’s World Cup squad after he was re-bailed in his drink driving case until after the tournament.
Cipriani was unhurt in the collision involving his Mercedes and a Toyota in the west London area of Chelsea shortly after 5:00am on June 1.
“A man arrested on suspicion of drink driving on Monday, 1 June, following reports of a collision in Imperial Road, SW6, has been re-bailed to a date in mid-November pending further enquiries”, confirmed a Metropolitan Police spokesperson.
“No reports of any injuries”.
A police spokesman said Cipriani had been re-bailed until mid-November pending further inquiries.
The 27-year-old Sale player was arrested in June when his Mercedes was involved in an accident hours after he had scored two tries and been one of the star players in England’s 73-12 victory over the Barbarians at Twickenham.
Centre Manu Tuilagi was ruled out of the England squad after admitting to assaulting police officers and coach Stuart Lancaster would have taken a similar stance with Cipriani had subsequent charges been proven.
As many as nine players will be trimmed from Lancaster’s training squad later this week but it is believed Cipriani has already been told by Lancaster he is still in his plans.
“At the moment he’s not been charged with anything so as a effect is in camp and training as everyone else is”.
England and Wales will co-host this year’s World Cup, which starts on September 18.
“It’s been extended by the police so we’ll wait and see”.
