Cirque du Soleil’s Paramour to Land on Broadway in Spring 2016
The Cirque du Soleil is headed back to the Big Apple with a new production specifically created for Broadway.
The show is set to begin previews on April 16, 2016 with an official opening set for June 2, 2016.
“Paramour” marks the first time Cirque has gone directly after the Broadway market, with creators of the show endeavoring to give the production more of a storyline than traditional Cirque offerings.
The theater was formerly the home of “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark”, when the venue was known as the Foxwoods Theatre.
No casting for the 38-member company has been announced, but direction will come from French stage director and choreographer Philippe Decouflé, under the artistic guidance of Jean-François Bouchard.
Tickets are available now via ticketmaster.ca or by calling 877-250-2929.
Like “Iris”, the new production will have a movie theme, taking place during the Golden Age of Hollywood.
Cirque du Soleil has found success in New York with tour stops of big-tent shows such as “Amaluna” (pictured above), but hasn’t yet carved out a permanent foothold in the city the way the company has in Las Vegas, where eight of its titles are now running. Cirque du Soleil’s shows pose physical challenges to its circus-style performers; in 2013, the company had its first death when performer Sarah Guillot-Guyard fell 94 feet during a performance of “Ká”. The show, which was intended to have a long run, closed after six weeks following negative reviews and poor box-office receipts.
Paramour will blend the Cirque’s typically grand production and acrobatics aesthetic with “a book-driven love story narrative, live musicians and professional actors in lead roles”.
