Citizen Cruz: Trump Hammers Away, Senate Leader Mum
Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz said Sunday that he would not deploy a special force to forcibly remove the estimated 11.3 million undocumented immigrants living in the US, should he be elected president.
Mr Cruz, who has long maintained there is no issue with his Canadian birth since his mother was a U.S. citizen, repeated on Saturday that “the laws and facts are quite straightforward”.
Another Republican candidate, Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky, said on CBS’ “Face the Nation” it was unclear if Cruz qualified as a natural born citizen and that Democrats will likely challenge that.
Trump has shone a light on Cruz’s Canadian birth in recent days, claiming that Cruz would have a “problem” if he were to become the Republican nominee. While that’s a break from tradition, his campaign says he’s able to reach far more potential voters than candidates at smaller events can do. “If I don’t win, I mean, you know, that can also happen”, he said. Cruz is returning to the state Sunday for a five-day bus tour through all 10 counties.
“The only way to end it is to repeal that statute… we will repeal Obamacare, but unlike Obama, I don’t intend as president to be – to use his word – an emperor”, Cruz said. Despite their commanding presence in preference polls, Trump and Cruz have nearly completely escaped paid attack ads, particularly in Iowa.
According to Trump, “it’s not a settled matter”, and he is now urging Cruz to get a “declaratory judgment” on the matter so it wouldn’t come up later.
Trump has since repeatedly brought up the issue unprompted on the stump and said this weekend in a pair of Sunday television interviews that “I really don’t know” if Cruz qualifies as a natural born citizen. “If I don’t make it I’m going to love you folks just as much”.
Donald Trump pressed forward Monday with his attacks on Texas Sen.
One focus group member said that Trump supporters may not translate into actual votes on February 1 in Iowa.
“As Granite State voters start to firm up their decision, it’s looking more and more unlikely that Trump will be toppled from his perch”, said Monmouth polling director Patrick Murray.
Trump’s solution: “I would say that I would want the Supreme Court to rule because they haven’t ruled”. “I am not interested in throwing rocks at Donald Trump or any other Republican running for president”.
The businessman insisted he was only responding to questions in the media, and not needling Mr. Cruz under the guise of wanting to help him down the road. Real-estate magnate Donald Trump held a 28% to 26% lead over Cruz.
Ted Cruz: Canada. “Do we want a candidate who could be tied up in court for two years?’ That’d be a big problem”.
Tuesday on Fox News, Trump said, “You have a cloud over Ted’s head”.
Dave Windmuller, a small-business owner from Mason City, said he personally doesn’t question Cruz’s eligibility to be president.
