Civilization series tops 31M games sold
As you’d expect, the GTA series is more or less a licence for Take-Two to print money.
It was only a couple of months ago that Take-Two revealed that GTA5 had sold over 52 millions copies across the various platforms it’s available on, but the company revealed new sales numbers for the game during its fiscal first quarter 2016 earnings call earlier today.
“Grand Theft Auto V”, which lets users complete missions and engage in activities such as driving and shooting, has sold more than 54 million copies since its launch in September 2013.
What distinguishes titles like Grand Theft Auto and Mafia isn’t necessarily its basic structure, but the fact that two offer very different experiences. Although Rockstar Games and 2K Games are sister companies, they apparently don’t share technology: We’re blessed that we have two distinct labels at this company. Adjusted digital revenue also more than doubled to $254 million.
Revenue was driven higher by a handful of reliable franchises, including “Grand Theft Auto“, “Borderlands“, and sports games tied to WWE wrestling and NBA basketball, Take-Two said.
The company projects net revenues of $1.3 to 1.4 billion for the year. Net income increased to $34.2 million, as compared to net loss of $11.2 million for the year-ago period.
For the second quarter, Take-Two said it expects adjusted revenue of between $275 million and $325 million, and adjusted per-share profit of between 5 cents and 15 cents.
“Recurrent consumer spending” refers to virtual currency, DLC, and online games, and grew 47% year-over-year for Take-Two, accounting for 25% of total Non-GAAP revenue.
Analysts on average expected the company to earn 36 cents per share on revenue of $351.4 million, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
