Clair Police Officer Killed In Westmoreland County Shooting
A Pennsylvania police officer was shot to death after having responded to a call over a domestic violence dispute.
He was captured nearby a power plant outside New Florence following a six-hour manhunt.
Police say Shetler shot St. Clair Township Officer Lloyd Reed after police were called to the domestic situation in New Florence on Saturday night.
Shetler fled the incident after an exchange of gunfire with Reed, and is being treated for a gunshot wound to his shoulder.
Authorities say they are searching for 31-year-old Ray Shelter Jr.in connection with the shooting. Police had advised residents in New Florence to lock the doors and windows of their homes and vehicles.
Police say the woman involved in the domestic incident suffered minor injuries.
“He was a dedicated officer, down to earth”, Held said. “Unfortunately. this has become a nationwide trend, and it’s hit close to home”, Westmoreland County Sheriff Jonathan Held told NBC station WPXI of Pittsburgh.
Sunday morning, police departments from across the state are sending their condolences. “He really cared for the community”.
WJAC-TV reports the gunman is still at large in the New Florence area.
To honor Officer Reed, Gov. Tom Wolf ordered United States and Pennsylvania flags to half-staff at state facilities across the county and at the Capitol Complex in Harrisburg.
“I’m very sorry for their loss”, Porter said.
