Clarity found in Charlotte shooting
Dozens of protesters marched from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police headquarters to the city center Wednesday night after a prosecutor’s announcement that Officer Brentley Vinson would not be charged in Keith Lamont Scott’s death.
Charles Monnett represents the family of Keith Lamont Scott, who was shot on September 20 by a Charlotte officer.
The 43-year-old was killed on September 20 in the auto park of an apartment complex.
Murray concluded that after thorough review, Officer Vinson acted lawfully when he used deadly force against Keith Scott.
“We respectfully ask that you please keep any protests that may occur peaceful”, it said.
Police in Charlotte say four people have been arrested at protests in uptown after a prosecutor announced a decision on the shooting investigation into the death of Keith Lamont Scott, CBS affiliate WBTV reported.
Scott’s shooting touched off two nights of rioting in Charlotte and almost a week of street demonstrations. Mr. Scott was never shot with his hands up or while holding a book, did indeed purchase a stolen gun and was a convicted felon. The protests remained calm.
The State Bureau of Investigation, or SBI, took over the case.
However, District Attorney Murray said, “all of the credible and available evidence suggests that he was, in fact, armed”.
– After the shooting, Scott’s daughter posted a video on Facebook Live saying her father was in his vehicle reading a book. She pleaded with officers not to shoot before a burst of gunfire could be heard.
Following the shooting death of Scott on September 20, thousands of protesters flooded the streets of Charlotte to denounce the atrocity. CMPD tweeted that its Constructive Conversation Teams met with protestors, and were “listening to concerns, answering questions and engaging in conversations”. Scott’s family has said he was not armed.
Analysis of all the officers’ guns confirmed Officer Vinson was the only one who fired his weapon.
Video taken by Scott’s widow shows a different perspective of what happened – but also doesn’t tell the complete story. Legal experts have told ABC News that if Scott did carry a gun at the time he was killed, its presence would not be enough to forcibly disarm him according to state law. They didn’t speak to reporters.
In his press conference, D.A. Andrew Murray talked about a lot of things we already knew – that Keith Lamont Scott was spotted in a northeast Charlotte apartment parking lot with marijuana and a handgun.
The lawyers said they haven’t yet decided whether to pursue civil action.
Scott’s wife Rakeyia, who filmed some of his confrontation with police and the aftermath, insisted that he was not armed when he was killed.
Authorities found a receipt for an ammunition purchase matching a debit card that was in Scott’s wallet.
The case was among a series across the country since mid-2014 that has spurred a national debate over race and policing. “Each one had a full count. of ammunition with the exception of Officer Vinson, who was four rounds short”.
Police say the man was not shot by an officer and arrested someone on a murder charge.
