Clarkson, Hammond and May are back, on Amazon Prime
Yet, by signing Jeremy Clarkson and the rest of the Top Gear gang, Amazon is finally adding popular, attractive content to boost its already impressive value. Oh yes. I have already been there. “But I can’t tell you how good it feels to get the chance to produce something from scratch”, Andy said.
May joked: “We have become part of the new age of smart TV. Ironic, isn’t it?”
Whatever this new show from the former Top Gear presenters is called, it will surely be their flagship program”.
While the show being created for Amazon Prime-which requires a yearly subscription of £79 in the UK and $99 in the US-doesn’t now have a name, the company has confirmed that it will go into production shortly and launch in 2016.
This isn’t the first time that Amazon signed BBC cast-offs. In March, the BBC said Clarkson’s contract would not be renewed for next year, though the British network said it would seek to renew “Top Gear” for 2016.
This new show is a great get for Amazon, who has been steadily increasing the number of show under its belt in order to compete with Netflix and other distributors. Our approach is to give programme makers creative freedom to be innovative and make the shows they want to make. The outspoken TV host was originally suspended by the BBC for his actions, before it was determined that he couldn’t remain on the show.
Amazon is the world’s largest online retailer and Prime, an internet streaming service similar to Netflix, offers subscribers access to thousands of films and television shows, including original content.
