Clarkston woman could be charged in shooting outside Auburn Hills Home Depot
The incident occurred Tuesday at about 2 p.m. outside a Home Depot in Auburn Hills, the Oakland, Mich., Press reports.
“It’s my worst nightmare as a [concealed pistol license] instructor,” Doreen Hankins told the Detroit Free Press.
The number of rounds fired is unknown, but police believe she hit and flattened the vehicle’s tire.
According to the Detroit News, when the suspect, identified as a man in his 40s, ran out of the store and jumped into a dark colored SUV operated by a second male suspect in his 40s, the 48-year-old woman pulled out her 9mm handgun and opened fire at them.
The Clarkston woman remained on the scene and was cooperating with police. She holds a concealed pistol license, the newspaper reports.
The woman who fired shots at their getaway vehicle in the busy parking lot is waiting to learn whether she will face any charges.
Police have not located either of the two shoplifting suspects. It’s not clear yet if the woman who fired shots will face any charges. Among other things, Michigan law provides that anyone who “because of carelessness, recklessness or negligence… shall cause or allow any firearm under his control to be discharged so as to destroy or injure the property of another” may be sentenced to up to 90 days in jail.
Warren mayor Jim Fouts said that the man acted within his rights because his own life was threatened by the robber.
According to police, the men were fighting with a loss prevention officer from the store after they allegedly stole more than $1,000 worth of power tools and welding equipment, McDonnell said.
