Claudio Ranieri still amused by Leicester title talk
Tottenham suffered a disappointing 1-0 defeat to top-four rivals Leicester at White Hart Lane on Wednesday but Pochettino insisted the setback would not add to the temptation to dip into the transfer market.
Sure, they endured a 373-minute scoreless streak in the league, but Robert Huth’s late victor against Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane not only ended that streak, it also propelled Leicester back to the top of the table level on points with Arsenal.
Vardy has been crucial to Leicester’s incredible Premier League campaign which sees the club sit second in the table, adrift of leaders Arsenal on goal difference. “They deserve full credit for the way that they believe on the pitch”.
Ranieri still refuses to accept that this result provided evidence that his team can win the division.
The former West Ham and Tottenham striker grabbed two goals in the victory over Aston Villa in Sunderland’s previous league match and their revival continued in south Wales.
Along with Alli, N’Golo Kante has been one of the most impressive central midfielders in the division this season and the Leicester player was busy in the early stages keeping Alli, Christian Eriksen and Erik Lamela quiet. “But sometimes if you don’t score and give chances like we gave, you lose the game”. They’ve not scored earlier than the 40th minute in a Premier League game since September (against Leicester). To beat them this weekend would be a big boost for us.
Vardy, who missed Sunday’s match because of a minor groin operation, had few chances against Spurs and extends his run without a goal to five matches.
When the 31-year-old Huth last scored in April, Leicester was bottom of the league in the closing weeks of the season.
“They played so well and pressed very well”.
“They say Arsenal, Tottenham, United, City, Chelsea, who are used to fighting for the title, say ‘Leicester are there, but can they arrive at the end and fight?'”
Asked what he said to people who claimed Leicester could win the title, the Italian replied: “I laugh!”
“They have won their last match and they are now confident”.
“The fighting spirit and the collective spirit pleased me – we are on the right way”, the Frenchman said. “But we continue to believe and we want to win, we came here to try to win”, he said.
