Clemson opponent named for College Football Playoff

You come in thinking, you know, if you make some shots you can be competitive. At 34 years old, Ford was – and still remains – the youngest head football coach to ever win a National Championship. “Fifteen years later, I think it shows our program has been pretty stable”.

Well, enough. Stop the grumbling.

College football has always been a gloriously flawed sport. Ends up with two of its teams facing each other (Colorado State vs. Nevada in the Arizona Bowl), and commissioner Craig Thompson sounds off.

Can we now all agree that four is the flawless number?

Here’s something else that should boost the spirits of Oklahoma football fans: According to the ESPN Football Power Index, the Sooners have the best chance of winning its next two games and winning the national championship.

No one was keeping this team down. It’s college football bowl season!

And that brings us to the championship game, presuming it’s Alabama vs. Clemson.

Arkansas started 2-4. The final six games, they were 5-1, with their one loss by a single point. Victories over Notre Dame, Florida State, and most recently, tenth-ranked North Carolina, represent this team’s best work, and it will be interesting to see how the Tigers fare against the Big 12 champ. We’ll find out when Utah faces BYU in the Las Vegas Bowl.

The conference commissioners who run the CPF have said they want to let the four-team playoff run thought its full 12-year contract expressly to avoid pressure to expand.

Here’s hoping that it doesn’t.

“I’m going to take my last hoorah, come out and have a great season”, Calhoun said. I’m not upset by any stretch of the imagination.

More than 15 years after they last worked together, there is still a healthy respect between the two coaches.

“I do believe at some point it’s going to be an eight-team playoff”, he said.

And how about a Fiesta Bowl pitting Notre Dame and Ohio State? The Spartans have allowed 16 points or less in their last four games, including only 14 to Ohio State.

Sounds like a lot of fun, right?

“We weren’t playing well at the end of past year in, really, all phases”, said defensive coordinator Mike Stoops. This is the eighth week Michigan State will be ranked No. 1, moving the Spartans into a tie with West Virginia and St. John’s on the all-time list. Or when the Spartans survived against Iowa. Does that mean the first game really didn’t matter? “We struggled in that game, and they outplayed and out-executed us”. The committee identifies and compares the top teams, then votes them into the rankings. Both teams are coming off wins from their confrerence championship. How about 17 or 18? It’s not the bowl game that matters – and that’s good, because Georgia State in the Cure Bowl? That seems to be the consensus, though ESPN analyst Travis Haney said before the pairings were announced that the Spartans should be “praying” they don’t get Alabama. Much of the starch has been taken out of those games. And what are we going to hear for the next 20-something days?

Oklahoma has a 28-19-1 overall record in bowl games.

And can’t we at least pretend that these athletes still are students and adding games would cut into their class schedules?

The rhetoric of confidence ramped up as the Spartans approached a playoff berth late in the season. This year’s will be, too. “But there are a lot of teams that are right here or better than us right now”.
