Cleveland Browns: Johnny Manziel looking better and better
Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel (2) takes the field prior to a preseason game against the Buffalo Bills at FirstEnergy Stadium. Though the Browns only gave up three points in the first half, they allowed the Bills to convert on four, third down conversions on the first two drives. This is because the third preseason game is when you typically see most teams playing their prospective week one starters for a longer period of time.
“We did some good things”.
Josh McCown will start at quarterback for the Browns after completing all five pass attempts for 33 yards and one touchdown in his Cleveland debut last week. “For competitive reasons, whatever, go for it. Until the league makes us tell ’em, we can just … not say anything”. Well hopefully not, but after the performances of Josh McCown and Johnny Manziel it’s hard not to avoid the topic.
“We will get the injury report tomorrow and sort it out by position groups just to see where we are”, Pettine said. Even with that, Taylor engineered a few good drives and made plays with both his arm and his legs. “I’m going to go out here and learn the plays, play in the preseason and just do what I can”, Ricky Seale said after practice on Tuesday.
But it was a night that showed the Browns’ quarterbacks are exactly what we expected them to be. He placed the ball, made some good throws, used his feet when he had to, and I think that is the area of his game where when he does move and he is successful with it, he is moving with a goal.
While Manziel did his best to bring the team in a possible shot of winning, he floundered in the two-minute offense as he completed 1 of 6 passes for six yards and a 15-yard run. Manziel was 10-of-18 with one touchdown in his second game of the 2015 preseason, and he added three rushes for 19 yards to the total.
Last night’s game did nothing to quiet those who will foolishly clamor for an unprepared Manziel to take over the starting role for the Browns. I thought Johnny early on did some good things. Also, DT Xavier Cooper had two sacks and massive DT Danny Shelton plugged the middle.
McCown shouldered the blame for his offensive woes despite the fact he was sacked three times and hurried several others by Buffalo’s sensational front men.
Unfortunately, the veteran quarterback wasn’t the only Brown to sustain an injury Thursday night. Mike Pettine went out of his way to continue to tout Josh McCown as the No. 1 QB on the depth chart, and that’s how it should be.
“I’m still going out trying to play my best and make an impression”.
