Cleveland Cavaliers make smart trade to land Kyle Korver
The Korver trade comes two years to the day after the Cavaliers acquired sharpshooter J.R. Smith in a trade with the New York Knicks.
Since the end of the 2015-2016 National Basketball Association season, the Celtics is one the busiest team searching for high-caliber players to augment their rosters. Movement regarding this National Basketball Association trade rumor has become fast. Even in the regular season, if Korver can help bring down the minutes of the starters, that’s a huge plus. And, once the remaining big pieces from Atlanta are gone, that will give the Eastern teams a chance to wiggle up the standings, because let’s face it. Kent Bazemore is not going to keep the Hawks in the playoff picture.
It’s also likely he’ll fit in well playing alongside LeBron James, who has also formed a strong connection with Cavs forward Channing Frye, another strong shooter.
It remains to be seen who the Cavs target as a point guard. This will be a 2019 pick.
Sources also said there is a possibility of a third team being involved, which would be Dunleavy’s likely destination.
Jason Kapono, 2003-04 (21-for-44, 47.7 percent, 41 games) – The Cavaliers had two first-round draft picks in 2003, and after taking James at No. 1, they grabbed Kapono out of UCLA at No. 31. Kyrie and LeBron are so good at finishing at the rim the defense is going to collapse in an attempt to stop them. Korver and Sefolosha have expiring contract after this season while Millsap have a player option not to re-sign with the Hawks if he will not be offered a max contract by the team. In other words, Korver contributes to the Cavs’ long-distance shooting while J.R. Smith recovers from thumb surgery. Iman Shumpert can even hit a few here and there.
The game exposed Cleveland’s lack of depth at the point guard spot, as well as overall shooting.
And as if that task wasn’t already going to be hard enough, it just got a little bit more difficult.
“The mere risk of Korver getting off a clean shot terrifies opponents, and the defensive respect that terror commands opens the floor up for his teammates”, Kirk Goldsberry wrote for Grantland in December 2014.
While it’s all a bit convoluted, the bottom line is the Cavaliers are adding another dynamite shooter for peanuts.
Who do you think the Cleveland Cavaliers should target with a trade package? On the other end, Mike Dunleavy Jr.
We answered that question and more in this week’s installment of the Heat mailbag. He has never played with a superstar who possesses James’ passing ability, and he’s coming from an Atlanta team that is 23rd in offensive efficiency largely because its spacing wasn’t what it used to be. Nothing is eminent regarding the Bulls and Cavaliers working on a trade, but when there is smoke, there could be fire. Granted, the Hawks were utterly electric on the way to 60 wins during his All-Star campaign in Atlanta, but with LeBron James on board at his new destination, Korver could be unlocked in an obscene way.
