Cleveland Cavs News and Rumors Tristan Thompson to leave Cavaliers
Terms of the contract were not revealed per league and team policy, but earlier reports from our Chris Haynes indicated Smith and the Cavs had agreed to a two-year deal for a little more than $10 million total, with player option on the second year.
Cleveland Cavaliers general manager David Griffin announced Wednesday that the team has re-signed shooting guard J.R. Smith. With several players making eight-figure salaries next season, a max contract for Thompson would balloon the Cavs’ payroll into near-historic tax levels.
During Cleveland’s National Basketball Association Finals run in the 2015 playoffs, Smith appeared in 18 games (four starts), averaging 12.8 points and 4.7 rebounds in 31.1 minutes per game. Smith was acquired by the Cavaliers from the New York Knicks last January. The 11-year veteran made 45 starts for Cleveland, averaging 12.7 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists. By virtually being on a one-year deal every year, James also ensures that the Cavaliers put the best product possible on the court because they know if they don’t, LeBron could sign elsewhere the next offseason. If LeBron really had entire pull in Cleveland, Thompson would be signed by now, probably on the max contract that he’s been asking for. Our favorite was after he listed the players out on the floor and told his fans, “You ain’t about to sh*t on someone because everybody gonna make you play”.
