Cleveland cops face administrative review for Tamir Rice shooting
The officers are white and Rice was black.
According to Cleveland.com, Loehmann had left the Independence, Ohio, police department in 2012 after he had problems using a handgun.
The gun on the top right is the same as the toy replica Colt 1911 which Tamir Rice pulled from his waistband and pointed at officers Timothy Loehmann and Frank Garmback in November of 2014.
Loehmann shot Rice within seconds of leaving the police cruiser.
Jackson said he is not anxious about potential protests.
AP reported a statement from Rice’s family said they were saddened and disappointed by the outcome – but not surprised.
On Tuesday, around 50 protesters marched in downtown Cleveland, chanting, “Justice for Tamir!” Rice was brandishing a toy gun in a park, and a prosecutor said there were a series of mistakes but no criminal activity.
“She has been cheated twice, first by the loss of her boy and second by the prosecutor”, Mr Chandra said, referring to Tamir’s mother, Samaria Rice.
“The hearts, prayers, sympathy and support of the NAACP continue to abide with the grief-stricken family of Tamir Rice and the Cleveland community”.
Tamir’s family, which has filed a civil lawsuit in his death, has asked the US Justice Department to review Mr McGinty’s handling of the grand jury, which they believe was manipulated to exonerate the officers, attorney Subodh Chandra said.
“Our law enforcement can not be judge jury and executioner and its inexcusable to kill a 12-year-old child and not be held accountable”.
He says there’s some legitimacy in that.
Officers later found that Tamir was carrying an Airsoft pellet gun created to look like a real firearm. “They know that the power of the grand jury to indict is easy – they do it all the time”.
The reporter corrected Bush, saying, the shooting of Rice “happened in Cleveland”. His attorney said Tuesday that Garmback knew from experience the area had a history of crime and gang activity.
Rice, a 12-year-old boy from Cleveland, was shot by officers who were responding to a call about a man with a gun and Rice was playing with a pellet gun.
Mayor Frank Jackson and Police Chief Calvin Williams will meet with the media Tuesday morning. He said Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Tim McGinty went through “a process” which led the grand jury to its conclusion. And neither will the other officer who was with him in a controversial shooting that was captured on video.
Deputies set up metal barricades outside the Justice Center after McGinty’s news conference on Monday afternoon. So far, there have been just a handful of peaceful protests around the city.
