Cleveland’s win streak snapped by 9-6 loss to Toronto
It’s sad that a team that has been doing so well, with a Cy Young victor in Kluber, and fantastic manager in Terry Francona, an All-Star in Jason Kipnis, great young talent in Francisco Lindor and Tyler Naquin; yet nobody in Cleveland seems to be coming to the games.
Things didn’t go so well for Gimenez in the eighth, when Donaldson and Encarnacion hit back-to-back doubles, Martin hit an RBI single and Justin Smoak a two-run homer.
Reliever Jason Grilli came on in the eighth to retire the Indians in order and picked up the win after the Jays scored those three runs in the eighth. Lester has won five straight decisions, though he’s coming off two consecutive no-decisions despite allowing just three runs over 14 2/3 innings. One of the most magical 20 game runs in baseball history, much like the Indians, Oakland’s 20 game winning streak was defined by magical walk-off hits. Davis is just the eighth member of the Tribe all time to hit for the cycle, the last being Travis Hafner in 2003. Kepler’s second home run of the day capped a six-run fifth inning and gave Minnesota a 17-4 lead. He had the tightness after pitching the 18th inning of the 2-1 Indians win in 19 innings on Friday.
Padres 2, Yankees 1 • Melvin Upton Jr. homered on the first pitch of the bottom of the ninth to win it for San Diego. Hunter rallied to strike out Encarnacion with what otherwise would have been the third out of the inning, but with the inning extended, Michael Saunders followed with a double that drove home both Travis and Donaldson, pushing the Toronto lead to 9-6.
Zach McAllister, who pitched one inning of relief Friday, started for Cleveland.
Jimmy Nelson (5-7) gave up three runs, two earned, and seven hits in six innings. Trevor Bauer was originally tabbed to start but was pressed into five innings of relief work after the Indians depleted their bullpen in Friday’s six-hour game. Estrada, who has battled back tightness at times this season, appeared to be in some discomfort at times in the frame.
The Indians almost got out of the fifth unscathed, but Santana couldn’t squeeze the ball on a throw to first base that would have been the final out.
Tulowitzki hit his 13th homer of the season of left-hander Shawn Morimando, who was called up from Double-A to make his major-league debut.
White Sox 7, Astros 6: Dioner Navarro drove in a season-high four runs, and Chris Sale settled down after a shaky start to pitch seven-plus innings and become this season’s first 14-game victor. Juan Uribe hit five of them, himself.
Mike Napoli doubled to bring Ramirez home with the go-ahead run. His only blemish was a one-out single by former Jays outfielder Rajai Davis that finished off the cycle for the speedster.
After a almost three-minute review, the call was overturned and Carrera called safe with the go-ahead run.
NOTES: Toronto INF Ryan Goins (right forearm tightness) was put on the 15-day disabled list Saturday. Announced attendance was 46,197.
The 19 innings matched the longest game in Blue Jays history, a game against Detroit in August 2014.
The Blue Jays will try to salvage a split of the series Sunday, and get two wins in a row.
Blue Jays: RHP Aaron Sanchez (8-1) starts the opener of the three-game series against Kansas City Monday night, a rematch of last year’s AL Championship Series.
