Cleveland to provide security briefing on GOP convention

Two days into the preliminary meetings, there’s little sign the anti-Trump movement is taking hold.

Florida RNC member Peter Feaman, in comments characteristic of concerns expressed by other members of the committee, proposed postponing consideration of Yue’s amendment indefinitely out of concerns that any changes approved by the Standing Rules Committee would be seen as “abrogating the authority” of the Convention Rules Committee.

The current rules were adopted at the 2012 convention in Tampa, and they govern party activity, but only between the Tampa and Cleveland conventions Once the Cleveland convention opens, Rules 1-25 expire, and Rules 26-42 govern the proceedings until the delegates adopt a new set of rules. But Unruh has said she expects to win support from at least 28 of them – which under party rules means her plan would be brought to the full convention next Monday for a vote.
Ryder’s explanation, however, offered an outline for how RNC leadership will answer delegates who insist they’re not bound to Trump on the floor.
The city, like all convention hosts, was given a $50 million federal grant to boost security.
The finalists include former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, a boisterous rabble-rouser who has spent decades in Washington; Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, a steady, staunch conservative who would help to calm nervous Republicans wary of Trump’s style; and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, a one-time rival who has become one of Trump’s most trusted advisers.
But the strategy so far, which has relied heavily on email bombardment of rules members, has struggled to find traction among their target audience.
Some of the Rules Committee’s 112 members have been lobbying for a “conscience clause” freeing delegates from voting according to the instructions of their state parties – that is, according to the results of state primaries and caucuses.
Cotton said he disagreed with Trump’s initial comments calling for the U.S.to spend less or leave North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, though pointed to recent remarks from Trump that he said acknowledged NATO’s role.
