Clinic suspect says he’s a ‘warrior’ for babies
In a court appearance to determine formal charges, accused Planned Parenthood gunman Robert Dear reportedly announced his guilt-and strongly hinted at a motive.
“I am guilty, there’s no trial”.
“There’s a lot of things that they don’t want to be known”.
“Could you add the babies that were supposed to be aborted that day? Could you add that to the list?”
When attorneys and a sheriff’s deputy tried to calm Dear, he shouted: “You’ll never know what I saw in that clinic. He said he wouldn’t submit to a mental health evaluation, fearing that his attorneys would try to drug him up”.
During Wednesday’s hearing, attorneys and Judge Gilbert Anthony Martinez discussed a motion by Dear’s attorneys to limit pretrial publicity of the case.
A preliminary hearing and arraignment are yet to be scheduled. Then, prosecutors will decide if they will seek the death penalty or not.
Killed in the attack were Garrett Swasey, 44, a University of Colorado-Colorado Springs officer who rushed to the scene; Ke’Arre Stewart, 29, an Iraq war veteran who was accompanying someone at the clinic; and Jennifer Markovsky, 35, who also accompanied a friend at the clinic. Some Planned Parenthood leaders and supporters openly wondered whether the shooting was an act of antiabortion terrorism possibly inspired by a recent surge of criticism of Planned Parenthood among conservatives. Nine were also wounded. Planned Parenthood and my lawyer are in cahoots to shut me up.
“What he did is domestic terrorism, and what he did is absolutely abominable – especially to us in the pro-life movement, because there’s nothing about any of us that would condone or in any way look the other way on something like this”, presidential candidate Mike Huckabee said.
Dear was eventually taken into custody after a five-hour-plus standoff with police. The organization said the video was edited, but Congress still conducted an investigation.
Before the attack, a private security guard posted at the facility had left when his shift ended. “Let it all come out”. He’s believed to have moved from North Carolina to Colorado about a year ago, living in an RV on a vacant piece of land.
“If you are acting with extreme indifference to the value of human life generally and you kill somebody with that attitude, that you can be held to first-degree murder”, said El Paso County District Attorney Dan May.
In 2002, Dear was charged with being a peeping Tom; those counts were dismissed.
Planned Parenthood has recently faced intense political and social opposition. In a statement to the Washington Post, National Abortion Federation President Vicki Saporta criticized pro-life activists.
That shooter appeared in court Wednesday, and if his deranged outbursts are any indication of his motive – which hasn’t officially been determined yet – Planned Parenthood was right.
“But clearly we’re concerned as I think the rest of America about the increased sort of hateful rhetoric and harassment and intimidation of doctors and women who are both providing healthcare and getting healthcare”.
