Clinton and Trump give more details on their health
In June, Johnson was the choice of 8 percent of those surveyed. Clinton led Trump 43 percent to 39 percent a week ago and has trailed the GOP nominee only one time since mid-July.
One disadvantage for Clinton is diminished voter enthusiasm.
Democrats have sought to pressure Trump to release his tax returns, but the Republican has said he will not release them until a federal government audit has been completed.
Considering both candidates’ high unfavorability ratings, those numbers shouldn’t be very surprising.
Voters were asked if the future of our country would be pretty much the same or different regardless of who wins, and 81 percent said the victor of this presidential election would make a major difference. Clinton earned 74 percent support among Democratic voters, while 76 percent of Republicans favor Trump.
The poll finds 88 percent of likely voters think Clinton is intelligent, and 69 percent say the same of Trump. The measure for likely voters takes into account voters’ reported intent to vote, enthusiasm about voting and other factors that historically affect an individual’s decision to vote.
According to the poll, though Clinton is leading among young voters, she still falls behind President Barack Obama, who held 60 percent of the vote among those under 30 during this time in 2012.
With the addition of third-party candidates Gary Johnson and Jill Stein, Trump and Hillary are locked in a tie, each receiving 42 percent of the vote.
“Fairly or unfairly, what this was taken as was more evidence that she was not transparent and that’s what hurts her”, Shrum said.
Among registered voters, Clinton has a slight edge over Trump in a four-way contest. The poll is the first New York Times/CBS News poll of the election cycle to include a measure of likely voters. Only 34 percent say Trump has the right kind of experience to serve in the White House, and 65 percent say the opposite.
According to Wednesday’s poll results, 59 percent of Texans oppose a wall between Texas and Mexico, and 54 percent believe immigration helps more than it hurts the U.S. Republican voters saw a 9-point drop in enthusiasm, from 47 percent to 38 percent. Even among respondents who said they’ve made up their minds, almost half said they are voting “against” the other candidate rather than “for” the candidate for whom they’ll vote.
A look at the candidates’ demographic support also illustrates why the race is close.
Trump also continues to be unpopular among millennials.
Whites without a college degree are strong supporters of Trump (58 percent back him), while Clinton leads Trump among white voters with a college degree.
Earlier in the day, Clinton said she won’t comment on emails sent by former Secretary of State Colin Powell attacking her for “hubris”. 48 percent of young voters are now backing her, while Obama won 60 percent of the young vote in 2012. “I just don’t want to answer it yet”, Trump told The Washington Post.
“My overall impression is that Clinton has remained healthy and has not developed new medical conditions this year other than a sinus and ear infection and her recently diagnosed pneumonia”, Bardack wrote in a letter released to the media.
