Clinton campaign chief and Bernie Sanders vow: ‘We’ve joined forces’
From Politifact: Hillary Clinton became the first woman to be chosen as a major party’s presidential nominee on the second day of the Democratic National Convention… Holding a sign saying “Centenarian for Hillary”, 102-year-old Jerry Emmett of Prescott, Arizona, cast her state delegation’s vote. Now, she’s going from event to event at the DNC with her mom, a Bernie Sanders delegate from NY representing the 16th Congressional District. But it also came with a warning: That last glass ceiling isn’t shattered yet and Republican Donald Trump is a formidable foe. Her husband, Bill Clinton, closed the historic night with an expansive and passionate testimonial, offering a deeply personal – though scandal-free – account of their relationship. The Clinton campaign called McAuliffe wrong and said she would not reverse herself on the issue.
“People say, ‘She’s been around a long time, ‘ Clinton said”. As he frequently puts it on the campaign trail, he plans to call his wife a “change-maker” who “everything she touched, she made better”. “The first time she’d ever been overseas, and we were on the shoreline of this wonderful little lake”, Bill, 69, recalled.
In 2012, I wrote that Bill Clinton was able to mount a far more convincing defense of Barack Obama’s governing record than Obama himself seemed to be able to muster. Her running mate, Sen. “This was a four-day Hillary party, and we weren’t welcome”, said Liz Maratea, 31, of New Jersey. In recent years, as Democrats such as William Galston of the Brookings Institution are lamenting, the party has moved sharply to the left-abandoning the centrist, tough on crime and welfare policies that Bill Clinton espoused.
A nominee’s spouse always gets some love at a party convention. But Bill Clinton’s speech piqued extra interest since he hopes to be the first first man. Clinton, a former president, is a beloved figure to many Democrats, but he carries with him the baggage of numerous scandals and investigations. We asked York County high school seniors – among our country’s freshest voters – why they it’s important for them to vote and what they’re looking for in a candidate.
Hoopla and celebration gave way to somber moments as the convention showcased “mothers of the movement” – women whose children died in gun violence.
Former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, who unsuccessfully sought the Democratic nomination, said Kaine had brought his beliefs in Catholic social justice to his public service, something he has practiced throughout his career. “It’s great”, Bill Clinton said. “This isn’t about being politically correct”.
“Republicans hate to spend money”, she said. And it wouldn’t have been possible without the president of the United States.
Philadelphia’s police union complained that Clinton was showcasing killings by police without giving equal time to the families of fallen officers. The “Bernie or Bust” crowd organized a walkout from the convention, and they’re continuing their protest outside the arena.
Clinton appeared via video to close out the night, thanking the party for the nomination and urging any young girls who were watching that “you could be next”. (Say what?) But the parts of the speech that resonated most were the parts that encouraged Americans to confront the sheer breadth of Hillary Clinton’s resume ― and the human woman behind that list of accomplishments.
After Clinton won the nomination, hundreds of Sanders supporters walked out of the convention hall in Philadelphia.
