Aides to both Trump and Ted Cruz now concede that Rubio will have some momentum in the state.
Clinton led with 50.1 percent to Sanders’ 49.3 percent in 93 per cent of precincts.
“Tonight is a victory for the grass roots”, Cruz told his supporters as he blasted the “Washington establishment”. “For months, they told us we had no chance”, a jubilant Rubio said, as he became the first candidate to appear before the cameras to comment on the results.
“Tonight is a victory for every American who understands that after we survive eight long years of the Obama presidency, no one personality can right the wrongs done by Washington”, said Cruz during his victory speech.
Mr Sanders addressed his jubilant supporters in a ballroom in Des Moines amid chants of “Bernie, Bernie” and said he would move on with confidence to New Hampshire, the next state to vote.
“On June 16th when we started this journey there were 17 candidates”. Sanders did not concede the race to Clinton, and his spokesman Michael Briggs said they were “still assessing” whether to ask for a recount. I said “I have to do it”.

Clinton said she was breathing a “big sigh of relief” after the caucuses – despite the extremely tight race.
“Nine months ago, we came to this attractive state, we had no political organization, we had no money, we had no name recognition, and we were taking on the most powerful political organization in the United States of America”, Sanders said. In 2016, she entered the race as an even clearer front-runner, but found herself challenged by a 74-year-old senator who, like Barack Obama, drew large, enthusiastic crowds and appealed to college students.
Former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, a Democrat, and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, a Republican, both dropped their candidacies after faring poorly.
