Clinton changes tune on relationship with Republicans
The images reflected a strategic choice by her campaign: In a year in which outsiders Sanders and Republican Donald Trump are surging, Clinton is opting instead to highlight her government and political experience and vowing to continue Obama’s work.
Sanders is not a registered Democrat because there is no party registration in Vermont, but has always been a vocal independent who has often taken positions counter to the Democratic establishment.
Mr. Sanders voted against the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq while Mrs. Clinton, who was a senator from NY at the time, voted for it. I wouldn’t sign a contract with an “evolving” clause, nor would I want a president who continually evolves based upon reasons unknown to the average voter.
“As a student of history, I feel right now this country is most divided since the Civil War”. Clinton on Monday disagreed, saying she and Sanders agree on equal pay, raising the minimum wage and paid family leave policies.
Clinton opened a town hall before a primarily black audience here in Orangeburg with her oft-used line on Obama: The president, she said, “doesn’t get the credit he deserves for digging us out of that deep hole” and avoiding a depression when he took office in 2008.
Unlike too many folks on the left, Sanders understands how American politics works: Without proportional representation, third party candidates are mostly spoilers, taking votes from the party they’re closest to ideologically.
“Anybody who thinks that they can influence what I do doesn’t know me very well”, said Clinton. “We endorsed Hillary Clinton today, as we made clear, because we believe she will be the most effective person to get the job done from Day One”.
“People rightly believe the corporations and the powerful have stacked the deck”, she said, also citing her support for ending tax preferences for hedge fund managers. At the same time, most Clinton (56%) and Sanders (66%) backers say they would not be unhappy if another candidate actually won the Democratic nomination.
“If [voters] are thinking about debt-free college and social security benefits, then we win.
That’s what it’s still about”, Clinton said.
Is Hillary a hawk or a dove? . That was an unforced error by her spokesman, who should have thought twice about making news on a subject that the candidate had pretty clearly turned a page on, and for what? “He has to speak for himself”, said Clinton, answering a question about her differences with Sanders.
When her turn came, Clinton declined to rule out the use of force as commander in chief. “She will have no tolerance for failure to put veterans first”. “And I do think you have to control your borders”. On Saturday in Columbia, Sanders rolled out 20 endorsements from state leaders, including African-Americans such as Rep. Terry Alexander of Florence, Sumter County Council member Eugene R. Baten and Omari Fox, a Black Lives Matter leader. And he also blames the media for baiting him.
