Clinton email disclosure slowed by security concerns
The government censored 64 sections in 37 of Clinton’s just-released emails.
The thumb drive has copies of emails Clinton kept on a private server while she served as secretary of state, a trove now known to contain classified documents.
The drive contains the more than 30,000 work-related emails that Hillary Clinton turned over to the State Department after it was revealed that she exclusively used a personal email system to conduct her work as secretary of state.
“This raises very serious questions and concerns if a private citizen is somehow retaining classified information“, Grassley’s said in a letter sent late last week.
In May, the State Department released the first set of 296 Clinton e-mails, detailing how she handled the September 2012 terrorist attacks on the US diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya, which killed US Ambassador Chris Stevens and three others.
Toner admitted Friday that the intelligence community “has always been involved” in the review of Clinton’s emails and refused to elaborate on whether these emails contained more classified information than previous batches.
Todd, who hosts NBC’s “Meet the Press” program and will soon host his own news program at 5 p.m. daily on MSNBC, said he is also puzzled by Clinton’s decision to use a private email server.
Grassley wrote a letter to Federal Bureau of Investigation Director James Comey asking him to explain what the Federal Bureau of Investigation is doing to ensure that classified information contained on Kendall’s thumb drive is secured and not further disseminated.
On Wednesday, a judge scolded the State Department for its slow release of Clinton’s records.
Because the material was not marked as classified, Clinton may not have known she was handling sensitive material.
Clinton’s campaign also announced it would be posting her tax returns from 2007 to 2014, as well as itemized lists of her and President Bill Clinton’s speaker fees and business income from that period, on the campaign’s website later on Friday.
In March, a Clinton spokesman said the only reason Clinton had her own account is because she “wanted the simplicity of using one device” and “opted to use her personal email account as a matter of convenience”.
State originally said it would release all of the emails at once sometime in early 2016, but was quickly rebuffed by the court order.
