Clinton Emails Were Susceptible To Hackers, Tech Firm Warned
Datto Inc. finds itself in the crosshairs of the U.S. Senate’s Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, which is chaired by Wisconsin Republican Ron Johnson. In a letter to Datto, Johnson quotes from Platte River employee emails.
“These emails are now in our possession and will be subject to Freedom of Information Act requests”, State Department spokesman John Kirby said.
Clinton “essentially circumvented millions of dollars’ worth of cybersecurity investment that the federal government puts within the State Department”, said Justin Harvey, chief security officer of Fidelis Cybersecurity. At about the time of that exchange, Platte River had been in discussions with Datto about the length of time Clinton email data was preserved and whether copies were saved, according to a person familiar with the discussions.
In a statement Wednesday morning, the Clinton campaign accused Johnson of “ripping a page from the House Benghazi Committee’s playbook and mounting his own, taxpayer-funded sham of an investigation with the sole objective of attacking Hillary Clinton politically”.
Employees at Datto have expressed concern that much of Clinton’s email dealings had to do with certain matters that would cause her a few serious damaged if revealed.
In the same letter, Johnson shared an email from one Platte River employee to another, asking if an archived of the company’s emails existed.
The ruling is a significant victory for Mrs. Clinton and the Obama administration, which has argued it has already gone above and beyond its duties under the law in trying to recover its records from the former secretary and current presidential candidate.
Boian noted Datto typically sends invoices to customers if it plans to provide cloud backup services, which Platte River specifically asked Datto not to do.
Johnson’s letter, dated October. 5, instructed Datto to preserve Clinton’s records to determine if any of the 31,000 messages Clinton deleted are in the backup. He also asked whether Datto and its employees were authorized to store and view classified information. “And if you have a private server, it’s very likely that you would be compromised”.
The investigation would appear to be centering on the email activities of Clinton aides Huma Abedin and Cheryl Mills, and whether they sent the classified information to Clinton’s private server. “We have also informed Congress of this matter”. Then, under pressure from critics, she said she was sorry people were confused by the practice, later admitting in early September that her use of a private email system had been a mistake.
AP reporters submitted a set of questions regarding security issues to the Clinton campaign.
Fox News obtained a letter from State Department official Patrick Kennedy which states that “the Department has become aware of emails that were sent to or received from former Secretary Clinton between January and March 2009”, and Kendall is asked about the apparent two month gap.
