Clinton expands lead in delegates despite Sanders’ win in NH
Both candidates are working to woo minority voters, a key plank of the Democratic party, ahead of Saturday’s Nevada caucuses. Hillary Clinton has the edge over her Democratic presidential rival, Sanders, when it comes to scoring endorsements from unions.
Troy Jackson, Maine’s sole superdelegate who’s supporting Sanders, said he’s pressing for a resolution that all Maine superdelegates support the victor of the caucuses. The state’s Democratic caucuses are Saturday.
“I’m not going to waste a minute”, she said.
Neither candidate is pursuing a single-track strategy.
“This is what is wrong with politics in this country right now”, said Joe Sacco, a Las Vegas stagehand and member of the International Association of Theatrical Stage Employees, which endorsed Clinton last month.
A win in SC after his New Hampshire victory would give him staying power and worry some in the party establishment who think a more mainstream candidate is needed to win the White House.
This is making many Sanders supporters begin to ask if they are simply pawns in a charade. But he added, “I want democracy to flourish”.
Democratic voters are slightly more likely to say that Clinton represents their positions on the issues very or somewhat well than say the same about Sanders, 73 percent to 63 percent.
“I don’t go around, no one has ever heard me say, ‘Hey guys, let’s stand together, vote for a man.’ I would never do that, never have”.
The margins have varied widely, but they all show Sanders closing the gap nationally with Clinton since December, when it appeared she was retaking a firm command of the Democratic field. And 64 percent call him at least somewhat competent, after 55 percent said so in December.
Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton are in a dead heat to win the Nevada caucuses, and both campaigns have launched last-minute efforts to win over voters – including Latino voters. Expect the victor to claim momentum as the contest turns to SC, where another group of minorities – African-American voters – will play a critical role in who wins as they cast more than half the ballots cast in the February 27 primary.
The Clinton campaign has begun to downplay expectations after a virtual tie in Iowa and a double-digit loss in New Hampshire, saying they always expected a long, drawn-out primary.
KEITH: When it was Clinton’s turn on stage, it was clear she wanted a bite at that question, too. “Listen, we got mamboed by the Clinton campaign in Clark County eight years ago”. They’ve got real strength here. In December, just 54 percent of them held a favorable opinion of Sanders.
Clinton’s campaign was deploying an array of high-profile supporters throughout Las Vegas, including former Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, actress Jamie Lee Curtis and several members of Congress, including Marcia Fudge of Ohio, Maxine Waters and Zoe Lofgren of California and Luis Gutierrez of IL.
Trump said during a town hall event on CNN that he believed the pope’s remarks were “probably a little bit nicer” than first reported.
