Clinton hits Sanders over Planned Parenthood comments
“We’re taking on not only Wall Street and the economic establishment, we’re taking on the political establishment”, Sanders told Rachel Maddow.
Bernie Sanders of Vermont after he said that Planned Parenthood and LGBT-rights group, the Human Rights Campaign, had endorse her because they were a part of the same “establishment” that he was fighting to take on.
After the Hillary Clinton campaign on Tuesday went after Sen.
Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders is attacking Planned Parenthood – but not for the reason it deserves.
In comparison, Sanders raises money predominately from small, individual donations, with more than 2.5 million donations from one million supporters in 2015. In fact, Sanders’s campaign responded to the Human Rights Campaign’s announcement that it is backingClinton by arguing, “It’s understandable and consistent with the establishment organizations voting for the establishment candidate, but it’s an endorsement that can not possibly be based on the facts and the record”-a reference to Sanders’s long record of supporting LBGT rights”.
But dismissing Planned Parenthood as part of “the establishment” fails to confront the group’s pretty substantive critique of Sanders on reproductive health: that while he’s generally supportive of it as a concept, Clinton is the one who has introduced actual legislation.
What we are doing in this campaign, it just blows my mind every day.
The Human Rights Campaign and Planned Parenthood have since defended themselves, backing up a tweet from Clinton herself (see the “-H”).
“I concede I’m not going to get establishment support”, Sanders added.
“I would love to have the endorsement of every progressive organization in America”.
Sanders – who’s gaining on Clinton in Iowa and leads her in New Hampshire, according to recent polls – has benefitted from the political mood in a year when insurgent campaigns have shaped the race.
Planned Parenthood and the Human Rights Campaign both responded on twitter Wednesday morning to Sanders’ criticism.
