Clinton in call for more inclusive US
Hillary Clinton, in her first formal appearance since conceding the presidential election, acknowledged Wednesday that the experience has been terribly painful but urged a gathering of child advocates to persevere with their work and press “the values we share”. As a general rule, they don’t entirely usurp that will.
So here comes Sen.
Will the Electoral College system be scrapped in favor of the popular vote? Note that Clinton won California by 3 million votes, but that massive margin didn’t matter at all.
Boxer’s legislative move was followed by the predictable propaganda, with author Lawrence R. Samuel writing in The Washington Post that it’s time to not only end the Electoral College, but to do away with the notion of states altogether. All those millions of extra votes were simply wasted.
Trump leads Clinton in Michigan by about 13,000 votes, according to the Michigan Department of State.
“The presidential election happens in two phases”. Another fun fact: About one-third of the Democrats’ representation in the U.S. House of Representatives comes from just three states: New York, Massachusetts and the aforementioned Golden State.
As IBD pointed out in a recent editorial, the Electoral College was specifically created to prevent candidates from winning the presidency simply by appealing to a few heavily-populated, highly partisan regions of the country. This system, where the state’s popular vote victor gets all the electoral votes, dates back to the early 1800s. So the electoral college has been rigged for Republicans going back to the 1800s.
It’s long past time to clean up this absurdity and allow American voters to elect their presidents directly. Those electors are the people who actually vote for the president directly, and they meet about a month after the election to do so. Usually these electors select the candidate you’d expect them to select. In every single election for president, the victor won both the popular vote and the Electoral College.
But the electors aren’t required to vote this way. He said he found it troubling that one vote in Wyoming counts three and a half times more than one vote in California, and asserted a large reason the Electoral College was founded was due to James Madison’s wish to preserve the power of states with large populations of slaves who were ineligible to vote-in large part, preserving slavery. Each of the high school seniors was given a $10,000 scholarship and a laptop computer to help them navigate the college admissions process.
After the brief trip to Washington, Clinton was set to return to NY. But this only adds up to 165 electoral votes – not almost enough. Instead, it advocates for The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, which is an agreement that would have states award their electoral votes to the victor of the popular vote.
Right now this plan has stalled out. I understand that over the previous week lots of folks have asked themselves whether America is the nation we believed it was.
Eventually, a group called the Committee of Eleven proposed a compromise of the Electoral College.
