Clinton Leads Popular Vote By More Than One Million
In fact, I was pondering the idea of Mr. Trump winning the popular vote and Mrs. Clinton cracking the magic 270 by just a bit.
This is the fifth time in American history the victor of the popular vote lost the election.
“In my lifetime, I have seen two elections where the victor of the general election did not win the popular vote”, Boxer, a Clinton supporter, said in a statement on her website. But since then much has changed; tallying votes is now much more accurate and voters have many more avenues for becoming informed. The same could be said for someone who voted for Trump in California, New Mexico or Colorado, which all voted democratic as they tend to do. That she got away with crimes that would land lower-position government workers in prison turned many voters against her and split the democrat vote. Trump was an outsider and opposed by “the establishment” that many often claim decides which candidate gets onto the final ballot. To recap, Trump got 290 electoral votes and Clinton got 228. Frustrated Clinton supporters should work towards reforming the system so that future presidents are those who win the popular vote.
As of early this week, more than four million people had signed an online petition urging Electoral College delegates to vote for the victor of the popular vote in last week’s presidential election – Hillary Clinton – rather than Donald Trump, who won a majority of state Electoral votes. Likewise in New Hampshire, Clinton leads by roughly 3,000 votes, yet New Hampshire’s four electoral votes have not yet been awarded. In other words, these nine states are 70 times more powerful than the other 41 (which collectively had a 1.4 percent chance of determining the winner) combined. The United States should abolish the Electoral College.
Finally, Barack Obama won the presidency twice under the Electoral College system. The electoral college is composed of representatives from all 50 states; the number of representatives from each state is equal to the number of house representatives and senators each state has. California has the most, with 55. Before the election, the group said about two to three people a day were writing their state legislators asking for change.
“The job of an elector is to cast his vote representing the congressional district”, said Jim Rhoades, Michigan elector. As Martin Diamond put it, “The Electoral College.in its genesis and inspiration was not an anti-democratic but an anti-states-rights device, a way of keeping the election from the state politicians and giving it to the people“. However, Mr. Trump will be our next president.
Voters in MI actually cast their ballots for electors: they are representatives to the Electoral College. Given the divisive nature of this year’s election season, tensions are high.
The number of electors each state receives in the Electoral College is based on the number of House members they have plus their two seats in the Senate.
