Clinton: No troops in Syria, United States must welcome refugees
In a sweeping address in NY, the front-runner for the 2016 center-left Democratic Party’s presidential nomination laid out her vision for how to heighten pressure on the Islamic State and combat terrorism at home.
“Across the world, the Obama-Clinton foreign policy lies in tatters”, Priebus said in attacking the speech. “But that wont happen so long as they do not feel they have a stake in their country or confidence in their own security and capacity to confront ISIS.” . She called for a “more effective” air campaign with more allied planes, more strikes, and “a broader target set”.
“This is a time for American leadership”, Clinton concluded.
In her speech Thursday, Clinton described a more ambitious and prominent role for the United States: “No other country can rally the world to defeat ISIS and win the generational struggle against radical jihadism”.
Hillary Clinton has shifted her focus regarding Syria: she is now urging Congress to pass a bill approving stronger military action against the Islamic State (IS). “It was good for the economy and it was a way to rebuke the terrorists who had attacked our country”, she said.
Sanders runs more closely with the former secretary of State on questions such as “who cares the most about people like you” and who will fight the hardest for the middle class. It would also give the USA additional “leverage” in negotiations with Russian Federation, Turkey and other nations aimed at ending Syria’s civil war, now in its fifth year.
When American politicians consider solutions to the threat posed by Isis, they tend to favor abstractions over policy detail because, although Americans want to do more to root out Isis, we’re afraid of getting involved in another quagmire in the Middle East.
She then continued: “What we have done with airstrikes has made a difference but now it needs to make a greater difference and we need more of a coalition flying those missions with us”.
“Turning away orphans, applying a religious test, discriminating against Muslims, slamming the door on every single Syrian refugee – that is just not who we are”, she said.
“We have to fit a lot of pieces together, bring along a lot of partners”, she said at one point.
“Let me make this clear: we don’t have any illusions about how complicated this is”, Secretary Kerry told the Overseas Security Advisory Council in Washington on Wednesday. “Muslims are peaceful and tolerant people and have nothing whatsoever to do with terrorism”, Clinton said, according to the NY Times.
But her speech and comments were rife with examples of where she differed with her former boss, from having advocated arming the Syrian rebels early on in the conflict to calling today for a no-fly zone in Syria on Friday. “But the threat from ISIS can not wait”, said Clinton. Again, Hillary’s stance put her in lockstep with Obama.
During the debate, Ms. Clinton highlighted that she received many contributions from women, and that her Wall Street connections sent a message to al Qaeda.
Clinton has also called for the United States to continue to take in refugees from Syria, something a host of Republican governors and presidential candidates have said they would not do.
Clinton also joined Obama in criticizing Republicans for calling for Syrian refugees to be denied access to the United States.
Clinton is the first Democratic presidential candidate to propose an increased U.S. military effort against IS.
The endorsement represents another show of strength for Clinton, who has locked up most of the major unions despite Sanders’ message of helping workers overcome income inequality.
“We can not allow terrorists to intimidate us into abandoning our values and humanitarian obligations”, said Clinton.
If there is one thing we have learned over the past 15 years of war, it is that we need a serious force to support local allies. “We are better than that”.
