Clinton Popular Vote Lead Over Trump Now 1.5 Million
It is unfortunate that so many people are unwilling to accept the results of our presidential election. In addition, a national bonus system would encourage candidates to campaign in all the states because the popular vote would have an impact on the election. According to new figures released by The Associated Press on Saturday, Clinton received more than 1.5 million votes than her Republican rival.
On Sept. 4, the committee offered the idea of a president and vice president serving four-year terms, chosen by electors in each state who would cast two votes for president. The chances that three-fourths of the states would be upset about the Electoral College at any given time are slim; it’s theoretically possible for a candidate to win the presidency with just 11 big states, but it would require an extremely odd electoral coalition.
Yet activists are circulating online petitions and using social media in hopes of influencing Republican electors to cast their ballots for someone other than Trump.
If we want to get rid of the Electoral College and elect presidents with a direct popular vote, we have James Madison’s permission, in writing. “Throwing it to the House would be a mess”, he said.
However, I think it is probably safe to say that Hamilton had thoughts of George Washington and John Adams when he wrote “Federalist No. 68” 228 years ago and did not consider that the American people would be faced with the choice of Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump.
So far, only blue states have signed on to the plan. It would then go to the states, where 38 out of the 50 states would have to ratify the bill in order to amend the constitution. Are they still not intellectually ready and sufficiently politically and socially conscious and discerning to have the full and final say as to who occupies their White House?
The Arizona Republic reports that the electors are not legally required to vote for Trump despite having pledged to support the party nominee.
Yet the Founders likely never anticipated Donald Trump – or Hillary Clinton, for that matter. It would show that Democrats respect the will of the voters who chose a Republican, yet are willing to work within the process to keep a uniquely unsafe Republican out of the White House.
Donald Trump’s “huge win” in the USA presidential election is marred by the fact that it is the biggest loss for a winning candidate in terms of the popular vote.
Scott Lasley, a professor at Western Kentucky University and the GOP elector from the 2nd District, said he has no intention of abandoning Trump and opposes the effort because he said overturning the will of the people would cause chaos. Calculating the popular vote entails adding up final tallies from all the states and territories, which organise their own elections.
We share in the skepticism that Trump will serve the USA well in the next four years, but he won and now he gets the chance to prove us and other doubters wrong. For 10 delegations(Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Maine, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming), that would mean persuading only one Republican member.
Still, seeing Clinton’s popular vote is nice, even if it carries no legal heft.
State electors from across the country will meet December 19 in each of their state’s respective capitals.
