Clinton pressures Sanders to agree to new debate
This is the first NBC/WSJ/Marist poll to survey SC, but the results are consistent with almost all other polling for the state, which has favored Clinton throughout the fall and winter even as the challenge against her in Iowa and New Hampshire has become stronger.
As Sanders left Iowa and Minnesota for his meeting with Obama on Wednesday, the meeting was being watched for signs of the president’s leanings.
The White House said later that Sanders would meet informally with Obama in the Oval Office on Wednesday and “there will be no formal agenda”.
Emerging from the White House after meeting with Obama for 45 minutes, Sanders said he wasn’t bothered by a recent interview in which Obama appeared to be tilting toward his former secretary of state.
In an exclusive interview on board his campaign plane Tuesday, Sanders seemed to be wrestling out loud with the conflict between his desire to preserve his reputation for positive campaigning and his eagerness to defeat Clinton.
“What the president has tried to do, what Vice President [Joseph] Biden has tried to do, is to be as evenhanded as they could be”, Mr. Sanders said at a news conference, held later outside the West Wing of the White House. “That’s work that they’ve obviously done in the past, and that’s work that the president hopes they can do together in the future”, he said. “I was on the floor of the Senate for eight and half hours, in disagreement with him over taxes”.
Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee’s campaign released a parody video based off singer Adele’s 2015 hit song “Hello” ahead of Iowa’s February 1 leadoff caucus. “I don’t want to exaggerate those differences, though, because Hillary is really idealistic and progressive”.
“Hello from caucus night”. “We think there should be at least three or four more debates following the ones that are now scheduled”.
An Iowa man has been arrested on charges that he threw tomatoes at Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump during a campaign stop at the University of Iowa.
Determined not to repeat her losing effort, her campaign arrived in Iowa early previous year and quickly built up a sizable staff, led by some of the strategists who worked on Obama’s 2008 bid. It wasn’t clear whether the tomatoes hit anyone.
Johnson County Jail officials say Alemao was released Wednesday morning without bond.
Sen. Hillary Clinton would be “happy to participate in a debate in New Hampshire if the other candidates agree, which would allow the DNC to sanction the debate”, a spokesman said Tuesday.
Clinton said she wanted DNC chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz to approve the debate and for Sanders to join her. But both have resisted.
Asked if establishment Democrats would become unnerved if he defeated Clinton in Iowa and New Hampshire, Sanders said “the good news is we still live in a democracy and people have a say in this”. The former first lady has avoided hitting Sanders directly for much of the week, however, instead choosing to tout herself and her policies and only subtly knock the senator who is challenging her in Iowa and New Hampshire. The DNC indicated on Wednesday that it is unwilling to sanction additional debates. It said former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley has the backing of 4 percent of voters.
Snow is being forecast in Iowa for early next week, but people gathering for the presidential caucuses likely won’t be hindered.
Weather is always an unpredictable factor of the caucuses, which typically draw hundreds of thousands of Iowans to precinct gatherings to choose presidential candidates and conduct political party business.
