Clinton rallies with First Lady as Trump alleges corruption
With less than three months left in her role as first lady, Obama also reflected on the “glare of the national spotlight” that she and her husband have had to weather during the President’s two terms in office.
President Barack Obama doubled down Friday on his endorsement of Hillary Clinton, hours after the Federal Bureau of Investigation announced it is reviewing newly discovered emails related to her personal server.
House District 49 Candidate Carlos Guillermo Smith, who will most likely be representing the area in the Florida House next year, kicked off the program, followed by Orange-Osceola County State Attorney Candidate Aramis Ayala, Senate Candidate Patrick Murphy and Senator Bill Nelson. Clinton asked the crowd after ticking off a list of Obama’s accolades. Michelle said this year’s election is not about Republicans versus Democrats, but about something much bigger.
Obama is the latest in a stream of candidates and big-name politicians who have come to Florida to campaign as the November 8 general election draws nearer.
“I know there are some folks out there commenting that it’s unprecedented for a sitting first lady to be so actively involved … in a campaign”, Obama said.
Trump’s Democratic rival Hillary Clinton also tweeted after the incident: “Glad to hear @mike_pence, his staff, Secret Service, and the crew are all safe”. “None of that matters this time”, she said. “I mean, the stakes could not be higher”.
A comedian I met this week in Charlotte, an avid supporter of Hillary, told me: “She’s like the girl who tries to take cookies into school to make friends”.
Trump has been repeatedly criticized, by Republicans as well as Democrats, for failing to denounce Putin. “He has said publicly many times he is in for $100 million and he is happy to invest in his campaign”. If you want to send a message in this election, send a message about who we are as the American people.
Indeed both ladies were there to show exactly what dignity and respect for women looks like. Super PACS can take unlimited contributions from wealthy donors, but they may not coordinate with the campaigns.
With a steady lead in the race for weeks, Clinton’s campaign is concerned that her advantage could prompt some of her backers to stay home on election fay or cast protest votes for a third-party candidate.
For her part, Mrs. Obama emphasized the power of each person’s vote.
Hillary Clinton has not visited Jacksonville for a public event, just stopping once for a private fundraiser early in the campaign, but she will be in Volusia County Saturday.
“We can not kick back and think that we’ve got this thing won”, Mr. Obama told thousands of supporters in Orlando. Clinton turns 69 on October 26.
The Clinton campaign has described Obama as its “not-so-secret weapon” on the trail as she’s crisscrossed the country campaigning for the former secretary of state and former first lady. But she’s consistently expressed a distaste for politics, even revealing she didn’t want her husband to enter political life.
