Clinton, Sanders clash over guns ahead of debate
The three Democratic presidential candidates are set to clash once more on Sunday.
In the past two weeks, the Democratic race has gone from a relatively civil disagreement over policy to a contentious competition between Clinton and Vermont Sen.
Bill Clinton may not be the “secret weapon” that Hillary Clinton needs in the USA presidential race.
According to Goldford, the recent surge by Sanders was not anticipated by the Clinton campaign.
The leading Democratic contenders stepped up their attacks on each other during the past week, battling over guns, healthcare and Wall Street with growing intensity as polls showed Sanders gaining ground on Clinton in key states.
Clinton told the group, “I believe in all my heart that we can be a better country”, before wrapping up his address and stepping down from the stage to work the crowd.
Turner acknowledged that Sanders has a hurdle in appealing to black voters throughout the South, a more socially and politically conservative region where protest votes are less likely.
“I think beating him ultimately would be easier than beating her”, Trump told Byron York last week. “He has not differed a whit”, Nelson said. “She gets pushed by (U.S. Sen.) Elizabeth Warren (a Massachusetts Democrat) and Bernie Sanders because she’s more willing to cross the aisle and stake out hawkish positions on defense”. On this question, he agrees nearly word-for-word with Republican front-runner Donald Trump.
Voters, however, do not seem to care.
Meanwhile, Sanders supporters target those at the upper end: the millionaires and billionaires who he and his followers believe have enriched themselves over the past 20 years with no discernable change in the financial well-being of the middle and working classes.
The Sanders campaign – with more than 50 paid S.C. staffers and offices across the state – says its volunteers have knocked on more than 165,000 doors statewide and attempted to reach 500,000 voters, roughly the number of ballots cast in the 2008 Democratic presidential primary.
Yes, even if Hillary does seal the deal at or before the convention, she may well find herself less the Nixon critics say and more the Ford of the season, an unpopular and unglamorous sitting leader weak enough to be bested in the general by someone who’d otherwise find it impossible to claim the White House. Many Democratic primary voters support universal health care even if it means their taxes will rise.
Sanders was never a hippie, said Nelson, nor a 1960s social or cultural radical.
If you thought the political landscape couldn’t be more unsettled, think again. MoveOn.org and Political People Blog are two influential activist websites who have just endorsed Bernie Sanders.
“In the short term, Republicans would prefer to run against Sanders but only on the condition that Republicans have a strategy for thwarting the leftward movement of the Democratic Party”, the operative said. “And I want to admit it”.
At the same time, Sanders has also drawn praise from some Republicans on issues such as immigration reform, as members from both camps fear allowing more guest workers in will suppress the wages of US workers.
Clinton lambastes Sanders over his record on gun control – one area where he may be vulnerable with Democrats – especially for voting to shield gun manufacturers from lawsuits.
“He’s going to discuss issues with you”, Nelson said. “They are going to message and organize and not just win it, but lock it down overwhelmingly”.
The decision to use Chelsea Clinton for an attack on Sanders, and the decision to go after Sanders over his support for a single-payer health system have both raised eyebrows. The debate comes as the Iowa caucuses on February 1 and the New Hampshire primary on February 9 draw closer.
“That, of course, matches Iowa and New Hampshire to a T”, Enten said. Ben Carson says that Barack Obama’s housing policies are “failed socialism”. And so here’s Senator Sanders coming along saying ‘you mistrust government now?
