Clinton: Sanders ‘vote for the gun lobby’

The momentum for Senator Bernie Sanders just keep growing as a brand new Quinnipiac Poll released Tuesday afternoon has Sanders leading in the Democratic polls by 5 points.

Clinton and Sanders have split the lead there in recent surveys, but a poll average compiled by RealClearPolitics.com show Sanders making steady gains in Iowa while Clinton has slumped. The ARG poll also shows Sanders with a 24 percent lead among independents who are likely to participate in the Iowa caucuses.

Even Vice President Biden, who flirted with running before deciding against it a year ago, took an implicit swipe at Clinton by suggesting she’s late to the cause on the issue of income inequality.

“I stand with the president on gun issues”, Sanders said when shown the advertisement.

“The Iowa Republican Caucuses are tight as a tick entering the final two weeks of the campaign”, Quinnipiac poll assistant director Peter Brown said.

The best Sanders aides can say is they hope total turnout is somewhere between that of 2004, when 125,000 Democrats turned out to caucus throughout Iowa, and 2008, when a record-breaking 239,000 Democrats turned out. Still, he has gained 6 points while she has lost an equal amount in a month’s time, according to results from a December PPP poll.

Clinton, picking up the endorsement of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, cast Sanders Tuesday as weak on gun control.

The Sanders campaign quickly responded by saying that Chelsea Clinton was “wrong”. He leads Clinton 53% to 39% in the early voting state. But for the next two contests, SC and Nevada, Clinton still holds double-digit leads in both. “Bernie Sanders actually voted against it. But there’s only one candidate who fought for it and that candidate is Hillary”, he said.

“These are the kinds of differences people deserve to know about as they make up their minds”, Clinton said.

Chelsea Clinton hit the trail for the first time this election cycle on Tuesday to campaign for her mother, and she came out swinging.

Clinton aides believe that count is slightly misleading, largely because it does not include cable ads, which Clinton has invested heavily on.

She said if she wins the Democratic nomination, she would immediately begin work “right then and there” on “how we organize the White House, how we organize the Cabinet, what’s the legislative agenda” – even before the general election.
