Clinton says she won’t ‘be silenced’ on gun violence
Her Latinos for Hillary effort has already taken Clinton to South Florida, and she arranged watch parties geared toward garnering Hispanic support during Tuesday’s debate in Las Vegas.
Clinton talked about living in San Antonio for a short time at age 24 while registering voters for the democrats. “Immigration has provided a pathway to opportunity and I daresay the vast majority of Americans regardless of political affiliation have an immigrant in a parent, grand-parent or great-grandparents”. Clinton has a history of popularity with Hispanic voters. She however had all the nicest words for Castro and for his twin, brother, Congressman Joaquin Castro. Clinton finds herself in a tighter-than-expected race with Vermont Independent Sen.
“Speaking Spanish doesn’t make up for the fact that many Republicans are working to tear Latino families apart”, Xochitl Hinojosa, director of Clinton’s Coalition Press, told Fusion in an email. In the 2008 Democratic Primaries, Hispanic voters chose Clinton over then-Senator Barack Obama by a 2 to 1 margin, according to CNN.
Castro’s support follows a strong performance by Clinton during the first Democratic debate on 13 October.
Clinton was introduced, and endorsed by Secretary of Housing and Development Julian Castro. The protesters were there to heckle Clinton about the 2012 terrorist attack in Benghazi, an issue she will speak about when she testifies to Congress on the matter next week. On Wednesday, she spoke with stations in Hampton Roads, Virginia; Raleigh, North Carolina; Denver; Minneapolis and Atlanta.
The crowd roared with appreciation as Clinton recounted hours she spent walking the streets of San Antonio as a volunteer four decades ago in the 1972 election, registering voters with the bushy-haired boyfriend who would go on to become her husband and eventually the president. At a question-and-answer session before the rally, Clinton suggested that she might seriously consider Castro for a spot in her presidential administration but didn’t specify a position.
Hillary Clinton opened the door today for Julian Castro to be a possible pick for vice president if she wins the Democratic nomination, saying she is “going to really look hard at him for anything, because that’s how good he is”. “I believe talent is universal but opportunity is not in America today”, she said, kicking off her national Latinos for Hillary grassroots movement. “I will look at him for everything”.
Castro has been a staunch defender of Clinton over the last few months.
“It’s flattering”, he said of the speculation at an event in Kansas City in July. I mean, why not focus on Iowa and New Hampshire right now? Nobody signs up for that.
