Clinton says she would break up “big banks” if needed
Less than 100 days out from South Caroline’s first-in-the-South Democratic primary, all three of the party’s presidential candidates gathered here Saturday to make their pitch to hundreds of activists at the state’s annual Blue Jamboree on the banks of the Ashley River.
Hillary Clinton defended her Wall Street reform plan while Martin O’Malley sharpened his attacks on the front-runner and rival Bernie Sanders, who made a case for why he’s the most outspoken candidate on criminal justice reform.
“And people say, well, can you do that without raising taxes on the middle class?”
SC remains Sanders’s biggest challenge.
“I am willing to break up the big banks if they need to be broken up, and I am more than willing to hold executives accountable when they make decisions that cause the rest of the economy the troubles that we saw”, she said.
“You know the deck is rigged, but we’ve got to reshuffle that deck”, Clinton said, speaking to the growing concern within her party’s base that the political and economic systems are skewed to benefit the rich and powerful.
Hillary Clinton is continuing her focus on health care tax cuts this weekend with a series of new ads and speeches.
Sanders believes in “socialism”, O’Malley said, adding it was “a failed ideology from our past”.
In addition to the television ads in Iowa and New Hampshire, Sanders’ campaign also announced Friday that it will begin airing radios ads in SC that focus on the candidate’s record on racial equality. “Well, I don’t want to see your taxes go up, I want to see your health-care costs go down”.
As he has throughout his campaign, he chalked up his lack of support among black voters to a low name ID.
A few in the crowd had waited on their feet for hours after Sanders spoke to make their presence known during Clinton’s speech.
The Vermont senator told reporters in North Charleston on Saturday that he feels confident that his campaign will continue to pick up steam here and in other places.
“Secretary Clinton has the commitment, skills and experience to move our country forward, and the most effective strategy to win the presidency”. Kirsten Gillibrand’s Family and Medical Leave Act.
“When a working-class woman has a baby, she should not be forced to go back to work a week or two later”, Sanders said.
“There are differences in this race”, O’Malley said. That’s compared to 21 percent who said they would support Sanders, and one percent who chose O’Malley. “For a long time, watching the national news, I’m sure you thought you only had two choices”.
“I think we’re going to shock a few people on Election Day, because I think we’re going to win here”, Sanders told a crowd in Columbia moments after officially filing the paperwork to be a candidate on the Democratic primary ballot.
