Clinton struggles to win over younger women
That’s according to Rubio’s campaign manager, Terry Sullivan, who told The Associated Press that this week’s disappointing performance in New Hampshire will extend the Republican nomination fight for another three months, if not longer. So, let’s just say the stakes are high in tonight’s debate, especially for Clinton.
Clinton started the year with $10 million more than him in the bank, but Sanders raised $20 million to her $15 million in January, helping him narrow her cash advantage.
“One of the big things that separates us from past insurgent campaigns is that we’ll have the resources to enable us to compete across a broad range of states”, said Tad Devine, a senior strategist for Sanders.
Women between 30 and 44 in 2008 were slightly more likely to support Clinton than Obama, while this year a lot of them supported Sanders. Will he keep it up or add new, more direct lines of attack? He has already deployed paid staff to all the states that vote through March 1, including 50 each to Nevada and SC, where he is also running TV ads.
The first two states to vote were overwhelmingly white. “If they aren’t, they speak up”. Expect to hear more about the Flint water crisis, criminal justice reform, voting rights and immigration reform.
New Hampshire has 24 pledged delegates that are assigned based on the proportion of the popular vote received.
Meanwhile, Clinton recognized in her concession speech Tuesday night that she needs to improve how she communicates with young voters, who overwhelmingly support Sanders.
“I don’t think there is any doubt that he wants Hillary to win the nomination and believes that she would be the best candidate in the fall and the most effective as president in carrying forward what he’s achieved”, Carney said. Sanders has given her a real race and she’s hitting increasingly populist tones.
Clinton – who outraised Sanders $114.4 million to $74.9 million in 2015 – still has formidable financial resources, including a national network of donors that she and her husband Bill Clinton have cultivated over four decades. Debates are always an opportunity for candidates to test each other and that can sometimes mean saying or agreeing to positions that will give the other party fodder in the general election.
The runaway victory by Sanders, a self-described democratic socialist advocating nothing less than “political revolution”, spelled a deflating if expected defeat for Hillary Clinton, who put a fearless face on the loss and admitted she had some work to do as the campaign moves south.
