Clinton, Trump Campaign at State Fair, Opt Out of Soapbox
Newcomers would walk up and say, “When is Hillary scheduled?” or “What time does Trump go on?”
If it feels like the Hillary Clinton email scandal has been dragging on forever, it nearly has. She didn’t want to have to carry two devices. Sanders quipped. “I apologize”.
Supporters of Bernie Sanders Bill and Leah Childress with their daughter Samantha, 19. Her doctors recommend medical marijuana to ease the pain, but it’s hard to get because it’s illegal to sell in Iowa.
Clinton, wisely, has taken heed of the Sanders’ crusade and has spun out her own mild populist stance backing a ramp up in federal spending on jobs and education, tuition free college education, and unabashedly touting blacklives matter.
But Trump also downplayed the idea he needs to get more specific – and he pointed to the most recent poll in Iowa which shows he’s leading the pack of Republican presidential candidates here. Most spend 20 minutes at the “soap box” to deliver a brief speech and take questions.
Before touring the fair, Clinton was in a defensive mood with reporters. Chafee said. “This is a good test and I ask you voters to do your homework and sift through all the issues and you decide if it’s all about the money”.
But it’s unlikely that Trump – shrewd businessman, master negotiator, and insecure billionaire – has overlooked these facts. “They never raise it in my town halls”. “It is never raised in my other meetings with people“.
“She had a crowd one-tenth of what I have”, Mr Trump bragged to reporters, in a reference to Mrs Clinton, as he made his way across the fairgrounds amid a sweaty, sprawling crowd that encircled him.
Friday night, she joked about the email server, sayingshe’d opened a Snapchat account, and “I love it. Those messages disappear all by themselves”.
Also taking the soapbox Saturday was former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum who won the Iowa caucuses in 2012. Clinton was then secretary of State.
Other Republicans hit Clinton over the remark. And, it was about emails she sent in 2012. Plenty of undecideds came to see Sanders but also wanted to hear from Clinton, and her unwillingness to take the stage didn’t sit well with them.
“I’m exhausted of the career politicians”, said Kevin Larive, an insurance claims adjuster who likes Trump. Clinton turned the server over to the FBI recently to investigate the security of her email setup. On Wednesday, a Colorado technology company that operated the server transferred it from a site in New Jersey to Justice Department custody, officials said. But Trump did interviews with reporters as he made his way through the fair, hammering Clinton as untrustworthy and predicting that the controversy over her emails would become a “serious problem” that would ultimately cause her to withdraw from the race.
“They were not marked as classified, the State Department has said, and it is unclear whether its employees knew the origin of the information“.
But even if the emails highlighted by the intelligence community prove innocuous, Clinton will still face questions about whether she set up the private server with the aim of avoiding scrutiny, whether emails she deleted because she said they were personal were actually work-related, and whether she appropriately shielded such emails from possible foreign spies and hackers.
Sanders leads Clinton by 7 percent, 44-to-37, outside of the margin of error, according to a Franklin Pierce University poll conducted for the Boston Herald released late Tuesday.
