Clooney says lawyers will pursue sanctions against Maldives
Clooney is part of Nasheed’s global legal team and is visiting the archipelago with Genser to press for his immediate release after the United Nations said his trial earlier this year was seriously flawed.
Maldives former president Mohamed Nasheed, left, prepares to leave on a speedboat, apparently headed to an island jail, after appearing at the High Court in Male, Maldives, Wednesday, September 9, 2015.
“The next step will be to pursue targeted sanctions, travel bans and any other action we have recourse to until the matter is resolved”, she said.
“Political tensions in Maldives are running high, and there is a climate of fear spreading among opposition supporters and human rights defenders, as the human rights situation has deteriorated over the past two years”, the site added.
It not only went back on its promise but also sent Nasheed back to jail after saying it commuted his sentence to house arrest, she said. “She got a call from someone who had spoken with a government official and asked her whether the information they just heard were in fact accurate”, Genser said. The court said the arrest was akin to abduction and is an offense under the country’s terrorism law. She had visited the ex-president every day for the past three consecutive days, while Jared arrived Wednesday and immediately visited Nasheed.
Amal, 37, referred to Nasheed’s arrest as “a mockery of justice” when she spoke to The Guardian in April, calling it “arbitrary and in violation of global law”.
He said within a short time from Thursday’s talks a caller had mentioned to Nasheed’s wife certain details discussed privately in the prison.
Meanwhile, a representative of Mrs Clooney – married to American actor George Clooney – reportedly said the worldwide human rights barrister had been offered lucrative fashion contracts.
Nasheed was the country’s first democratically elected leader who ruled from 2008 to February 2012 when he was forced to resign following a mutiny by police and troops. His election ended a 30-year autocratic rule by the half-brother of the current President Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
The charge relates to the ordering of the arrest of an allegedly corrupt judge when Nasheed was still president in 2012.
He failed in his attempt to return to power in the 2013 presidential election.
