CM Punk beaten in UFC debut by Mickey Gall
Despite not having any MMA training and being all of 36 years old at that time, his status as one of WWE’s top stars brought a lot of hype to his decision to sign with UFC. The fight was a back-and-forth battle as Miocic recovered from an early guillotine choke and took control of the fight to end it with a flurry of heavy punches which were enough to earn him his first title defence.
Whether or not Punk does have another opportunity in the octagon remains to be seen.
Prior to UFC 203, Gall said he didn’t deserve to be on the main card when respected veterans like Urijah Faber were also competing. This was a hell of a mountain to try and climb. I didn’t get to the summit tonight but it doesn’t mean I’m going to give up. I’m going to hurt you.’ And then he kept staring at me as he walked off.
Gall wasted zero time getting the fight on his terms, which would be the ground for the Brazilian jiu-jitsu brown belt. I’ve got to get back on the ride. “Second-best night of my life, behind marrying my wife”.
The moment was soon snuffed when it was clear Punk was no match for Gall.
Punk got attacked, pummeled, annihilated, destroyed, manhandled, or any other word that fits.
Gall made good on his promise, quickly shooting a double-legged takedown on Punk, who seemed in shock as he laid flat on his back. “He probably shouldn’t have his next fight in the UFC”, White said of Punk to Fight Network.
Lacking any amateur experience in fighting or even real life competitive sports showed for CM Punk at UFC 203. Gall elected to wait, rather than ask for another fight.
“He hit harder than I thought, he knocked me down but I wasn’t hurt”, Miocic said. Urijah Faber and Jimmie Rivera fought before me. (If) I fight Sage next, I’m going to beat him up. I think that’s a possibility.
