Coach Rex Ryan plans to fix Bills’ penalty woes
Tyrod Taylor is still trying to establish a modicum of consistency under center, but has played well enough thus far to spark a bit of hope that his position might not be the team’s biggest hindrance in their bid to end a 15-season playoff drought. I mean, it’s one after another. I’m talking about “we” as fans who had to endure the stark possibility that this could have been a lost season by Week 3.
“Obviously, we made way too many penalties to win that game”, Ryan said. Dumb penalties, situations you just have to shut up sometimes. Let’s not act like it doesn’t factor in … if it’s close, they’re going to throw the flag on us.
The evening was an incredible success, and thanks to the generosity of the many attendees, the Tom Coughlin Jay Fund Foundation – Coach Coughlin’s charitable organization which helps families financially, emotionally and in practical ways when a child is diagnosed with cancer – reached its goal of raising .5 million to help ensure that the work of the Foundation will continue for years to come. “As players, you have to know that you can’t be borderline”. The Bills’ offensive game plan was tepid at best and it was clear the absences of running back LeSean McCoy and receiver Sammy Watkins had a huge impact.
RUSH DEFENSE: A. Neither running back Karlos Williams or quarterback Tyrod Taylor had any answers against the Giants run defense, which held the duo to just 55 yards on 24 carries.
While the offense has shouldered a lot of the blame from the losses in the first two weeks of the season, it was not due to the offensive line. He also had a touchdown and an interception, and had a 31-yard scoring run and a 32-yard touchdown pass wiped out by penalties. Percy Harvin did not adjust well to the extra attention he received with Watkins out. That is the best – maybe only – way to neutralize the Bills’ pass rushers. And then he shoved aside safety Bacarri Rambo before scoring.
Regardless of the reason behind the drop, when you have Rueben Randle, Dwayne Harris, Shane Vereen and Odell Beckham Jr. on the field with you and the ball still comes your way, you have to make that reception. While Rex Ryan’s group came unglued with overly aggressive play that resulted in 17 penalties, the Giants appear to be settling into a season at the quarter mark.
“He walked through the door knowing he was not going to subscribe to the scholarship mentality [of taking his time as a rookie before making an impact]”, former Giants linebacker and Super Bowl champion Carl Banks told WFAN-AM on Monday.
The Bills (2-2), by comparison, collapsed a week after a dominating 41-14 win at Miami.
The same could be said for linebacker Preston Brown, who missed while attempting to tackle Jennings from behind.
-SPECIAL TEAMS: D. It was another poor day for Buffalo’s suddenly lame kicking teams. Punter Colton Schmidt had a nice game with a 49.3 net average on seven punts. How does that relate to Buffalo’s defense?’Nine of those 47 flags have been personal fouls – unnecessary roughness, taunting – and all have been against Ryan’s defenders. Buffalo committed 14 penalties for 140 yards in a 40-32 loss to New England on September 20. They took four on Sunday, bringing their season total to 11. That’s partially on coaching.
Offensive coordinator Greg Roman stayed with Williams, and found a way to get him into the end zone. And on defense, the Bills have not been able to figure out how to get a pass rush against quarterbacks who are getting rid of the ball quickly, as both Eli Manning and Tom Brady did easily.
