Coach Taylor is Back! Kyle Chandler Reprises His Beloved ‘Friday Night Lights
“This is what we’ve all worked for, we’ve paid to be here”, he intones, his words set to a stirring score from Explosions in the Sky – the band that provided all the instrumental background music for “FNL“. I want you to know your friends and your family are going to be watching every second.
Except they are talking and they are texting and they are totally ruining the moment.
Maybe that’s why Austin’s Alamo Drafthouse-famous for its strict rules on theater etiquette-turned to one of the city’s best-known residents, Kyle Chandler, to reprise his role as Eric Taylor and talk some sense into their patrons.
“Turn your goddamn cellphones off”, he scolds directly to the camera.
As he tries to give an inspirational speech – “Let’s do it for each other and let’s make sure that we have some pride!” – he realizes his audience is too busy on their phones to listen to him. And when it came time for Coach Taylor to rip into his recruits, Gross recalls, the Emmy victor went for it. “We put you out of the theater”, reads the graphic at the end of the footage.
