Coachella organizers eye New York City festival
The promoters of the California festival have been in talks with the city to use Flushing Meadows Corona Park, the former site of the World’s Fair.
The fest – tentatively called Panorama – would not only be one of the biggest events in Queens since the 1964 World’s Fair, it could also draw fans and acts away from the wildly popular Governors Ball festival on nearby Randalls Island. Tom Russell, of Governors Ball, told the Daily News that the introduction of a corporate-run festival could hinder Governors Ball’s ability to bolster the NYC economy with its presence.
According to the Daily News, AEG has earmarked the weekend of June 16 for the hullabaloo, and is already getting acts on board.
Brace yourselves, New Yorkers: Coachella may be making its way to the city. Panorama would directly compete with Governors Ball, a music festival run by an independent promotion company, Founders Entertainment.
Governors Ball brought about $40 million to the city in 2014. In 2008 and 2009 the company presented two under-attended installments of an event dubbed “All Points West”.
But they have had better luck elsewhere. Performers included Drake, AC/DC and White Stripes frontman Jack White.
If it happens, the concert would mark the first time Flushing Meadows Corona Park would be used by a for-profit company for a paid-admission event.
A few said the borough that gave birth to the Ramones and Kiss would welcome the fest.
A source confirms the report to EW and adds that AEG is offering top-dollar to book premiere headliners for the festival.
