Coalition Calls For Civil Unrest in Tamir Rice Case
Those forces hovered over the proceedings on Monday when a grand jury declined to indict Officer Timothy Loehmann in the killing and Timothy McGinty, the Cuyahoga County prosecutor, explained why he had asked the grand jurors to not bring charges.
Rice was shot and killed at Cudell Recreation Center in Cleveland after a 911 caller reported a male in the area waving a gun.
“We are calling for community members to vote against Prosecutor Timothy McGinty”.
“What you are about to see here in Cleveland, you’ve never seen this before”, said activist Basheer Jones today at a press conference.
Prosecutors decided they couldn’t get a conviction after seeing enhanced surveillance footage of the shooting, he said.
“If not, then we will also be taking a look at who we can bring in…who can become mayor of this city, who will not be afraid to stand before the Cleveland police department and demand what the people want him to demand”, he said.
The grand jury cleared two Cleveland police officers of the November 2014 shooting after hearing weeks of testimony.
Two Democratic state lawmakers in OH said Wednesday they plan to propose legislation that would require at least two outside law enforcement officials to conduct investigations when a police officer uses deadly force.
“It reflects an utter disregard for the lives of the city’s black residents”, the Times wrote, later adding that the police department’s disregard for life was also “evident in the way the officers behaved after shooting Tamir”.
In asking for grand jury transcripts, Mike Nelson, President of the Cleveland Chapter of the NAACP said “Let’s take a look at the transcript to ensure the rights of the victim are protected”.
Activists held a third day of protests on Wednesday with about two dozen gathering at the front steps of the downtown building where the prosecutor’s office is located.
Police have started an administrative review to determine whether the officers or others should be disciplined over the shooting.
