Coast Guard suspends search for downed planes, survivors
Four people died when two Cessna planes taking pupils and teachers collided 1,000 feet above the Two small planes flown by pupils collided.
While radar has helped officials to determine where the planes collided, the cause of the crash remains unclear.
Two planes went down off the coast of Los Angeles on Friday in what could have been an in-flight collision, the Coast Guard said.
Friday evening, the crew of a fishing boat reported seeing a plane hit the water.
“The rescue operation has transitioned to a recovery operation with the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department as the lead agency”, the department said in a press release. Both pilots were experienced.
The crash site is located near the San Pedro community, south of downtown Los Angeles. The region is popular for flight pupils. However, Falstrom said his wife flew a Super Decathlon, an aerobatic plane by the same maker of the Citabria.
Two 87-foot patrol boats to conduct search patterns throughout the night until 9:15 a.m., Coast Guard officials said. As rescue operations combed an area a couple miles outside the entrance to Los Angeles Harbor Friday, where the water is as deep as 90 feet, they discovered the full tail of one plane and a partial number of the other.
The nearest harbor entrance was closed to traffic while the search continued.
A more extensive search resumed Saturday for survivors of a midair collision that sent at least one plane plunging into the ocean near the Port of Los Angeles. Three to four planes are in the air on any given day. However, the aircraft was able to go back with their airports, as well as the four people on board escaped harm. “We’re extremely diligent. I do not understand why, what occurred in this scenario”.
