Coast Guard to end search for missing United States ship crew
On Saturday, the Bahamian Department of Meteorology Forecast Office issued an all-clear signal for the entire Bahamas as well as the Turks and Caicos Islands, saying Hurricane Joaquin was “rapidly moving away from the area”.
Michael Davidson, captain, has been described by colleagues as an experienced leader and calm under pressure.
The same day, authorities lost all contact with the ship.
“We will be looking at marine logs, any electronic data, that will factor into the investigation so we know the course the ship took”.
On Monday, the ship’s owner, Tote Inc, said the New Jersey-based company would “cooperate fully” with the NTSB.
“He told me he loved me”, she said. I wish we did. “We did find a pretty good-sized debris field, which was past from yesterday and the other crews this weekend”. The ship was considered rugged and had been retrofitted as recently as 2006 but at 40 years old had been at sea double a standard service life. It was to transfer its routes from the Caribbean to the U.S. West Coast and Alaska in the coming months.
Tote’s Hanson said he could not speculate when asked Monday if El Faro had a propulsion or engine room problem before it was overcome by the hurricane. The company that operated the 735-foot vessel, Tote Maritime Puerto Rico, has not released their names.
“Big ships sink. That’s the very sad truth”, says George.
The Coast Guard was unable to fly into the ship’s last known position until Sunday, because of the fierce hurricane winds. A ship’s captain is trained to prioritize the safety of those on board, and the consider the importance of keeping a schedule, he added. Crews did find a deflated raft and personal flotation devices, he said.

Keith Griffin, a seafarer on El Faro, was supposed to be home soon. It said it was about 35 nautical miles northeast of the Bahamas. But, it said the situation was “manageable”. Sadly, one body from the El Faro sea disaster has been found with the U.S. Coast Guard noting that the deceased individual was found inside of their survival suits. Officials have not identified it. There are reports that material from the ship has been found over a 225-square-mile area.
Locating the wreckage would allow investigators to retrieve the vessel’s black box voyage data recorder, which preserves the last 12 hours of engine orders and communications from the bridge and has a 30-day battery life.
The source close to the investigation told CNN that the ship’s two life boats were not enclosed (like newer models) and that would have affected the crew’s ability to survive in extremely rough seas.
“We honor them best by steeling our individual and community resolve to educate and train for a world full of perils”, said Brennan.
Why did the captain steer into a Catagory 4 category hurricane?
“Mike was a very capable and experienced captain”, Legere said. “He took his job seriously”, said Nick Mavadones, a friend since childhood and general manager of Casco Bay Lines, where he and Davidson worked together. He said he was up late because the weather was getting bad. He said “it can go from calm, in a matter of five or six hours, to hell”.
