Coldplay to perform at Super Bowl 50 halftime show
Coldplay is set to storm the 2016 Super Bowl stage as the annual game’s halftime show performer, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Super Bowl 50 will be played on February 7 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.
The London-based act, which has sold more than 100 million albums worldwide, will release a seventh full-length album, “A Head Full of Dreams”, on Friday.
Coldplay is joining an elite group of previous headliners: Bruce Springsteen, The Who, Madonna, Beyonce, Bruno Mars and Katy Perry performed during halftime shows at the last six Super Bowls. Beyoncé is reportedly “in talks to make a guest appearance”.
Pepsi will be returning for the fourth year as title sponsor of the halftime show, which is officially called the Pepsi Super Bowl 50 Halftime Show.
While Coldplay are well-known and have earned many Grammys, it would have been disappointing to have them as the sole artist at Super Bowl 50.
Meanwhile, we had originally reported that Maroon 5 was in the lead to head up the show.
The insider said at the time: “The Super Bowl offer is a no-brainer for the band. Its a place of unequaled grace, spirit and beauty and we cant wait to play this show”.
“Now that you mention it, now I’m really, really nervous”, Chris Martin admits in a minute-long video released Thursday following the announcement. The episode will mark the first time a late-night series will air live right after the game.
