College football commentators lose their minds over defence’s last-second
The Seminoles tried to take control early in the second quarter by forcing Georgia Tech into passing situations.
But if Clemson were to lose at N.C. State next week, turning around and winning the conference at 12-1 may still not be enough, especially when at this late stage of the season there are still seven undefeated teams in the other Power 5 conferences. If he missed, the Seminoles would head to overtime. Patrick Gamble got a hand on the ball to seemingly force overtime.
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets defensive back Shaun Kagawa (44) celebrates with defensive back Lance Austin (17) after their win over the Florida State Seminoles at Bobby Dodd Stadium last Saturday. “It all happened so fast”, Aguayo said. Georgia Tech returned a blocked field goal on the last play of regulation for a touchdown to beat the Seminoles 22-16. “I’m going to be old and grey one day, and I can tell my child about this”.
Pittsburgh 23, Syracuse 20 – A fake punt for a first down helped set up Chris Blewitt’s 25-yard field goal on the final play of the game, lifting the No. 25 Panthers (6-1, 4-0 ACC) on the road.
Because of a touchback, Florida State received the ball at their 25-yard line.
In a way, the way Florida State loss probably means more to Michigan State’s Jalen Watts-Jackson than it does to the rest of the Seminoles’ season. “When you play the run better, you give yourself a chance and the red zone defense was 100 times better than it’s been”.
This is Atlanta. This is Georgia Tech. Then I saw it on the ground.
Not listening to the head coach can work out sometimes. FIsher said about the former walk-on’s performance against Georgia Tech, “I Thought he played well, I thought he played a nice game, he was efficient”.
Now, for the second week in a row, we have a special teams TD deciding a game on the final play – both of which could have a huge impact on this year’s title race. “But he went in [to the end zone]”. The Yellow Jackets were in Miami preparing for the Orange Bowl when it happened. The ‘Noles could only watch with a feeling of disappointment new to many on the roster.
Connor Cook, Michigan State: The senior quarterback completed 30 of 52 passes for 398 yards and four touchdowns to rescue the Spartans from Indiana’s upset bid.
Ultimately, it was the Seminole offense that lost them the game. On third-and-goal from the 10, Everett Golson’s deflected pass led to the Seminoles’ first offensive turnover of the season – and first turnover of any kind since their first game.
Cook recorded his second 1,000-yard season in the second quarter.
USC 42, No. 3 Utah 24: In Los Angeles, Cameron Smith returned the second of his three interceptions 54 yards for a touchdown, and Southern California knocked Utah from the unbeaten ranks.
“We know to do that”, FSU coach Jimbo Fisher said.
“We’ve got to continue what we’re doing”, quarterback Justin Thomas said.
“Now hopefully we can take that and try to get a few momentum and build on it”, Johnson said. “We did not finish”.
For Florida State (6-1), the end of its flawless season was shocking. It managed just 14 points in a win over Boston College on September 19. Against a talented but underachieving USC squad, the Utes couldn’t keep up.
Geogia Tech finally ended their losing streak and possibly turned their season around. Only two players really had a shot at him, but Aguayo missed a diving tackle and another Florida State player spun off Austin when he made a brilliant cut at the 20.
“So the Seminoles would most likely march on, right?” Fisher’s focus though is more on getting to Saturday than the game itself.
Moving forward, Florida State should recover fine against a weak Syracuse team next week, but Clemson is looming large on November 7th. Fisher hopes to channel the painful reality of losing into a learning opportunity for his program. We’ve had so many close ones like this go the other way. Like a win, after 24 hours, we have to get our mistakes corrected, and we move on. “I think that depth is something we’re going to have to utilize, and one of the ways to do it is to play a little faster, and I want our guys to do that”, Gregory said.
