College Football Top 25 Power Rankings: Week 7 Edition
In a larger context, however, what kind of achievement is more hard to pull off than anything else? This could be a fun one to watch, not for either fanbase though.
It all did come to late-night Salt Lake City, where the excellent Jared Goff of No. 23 California spent the country’s biggest game in a bout of lunacy, with five interceptions against No. 5 Utah (matching his total across five games).
What about team sports, though?
In the National Football League, only one team has ever gone 17-0 in a season in the Super Bowl era, the 1972 Miami Dolphins. The wins might be way too close lately, but the Cowboys are 7-0 – let’s just skip the formality and count the home win over Kansas in two weeks. Since the World Series began in 1903, only six teams have hit or exceeded that mark. (What a country.) North Texas lost 66-7 to Portland State, the worst FBS-to-FCS loss in our national history, and on homecoming day, so it fired its coach immediately. The 1996 Chicago Bulls had the best record in the league by eight games. You’re going to sleepwalk for most of the game against a miserable Maryland? TCU, Utah and Baylor remain the top three.
The 2015 college football season is heading for the halfway point so here is a ranking of the college football conferences in 2015 after Week 6.
I know the Spartans are banged up, but they just don’t look like a top 10 team right now.
The USA TODAY Sports 1-128 Re-rank rewards unbeaten records, which is why Michigan State remains two spots ahead of Michigan even as the eye test says the following: Michigan should beat its in-state rival on Saturday. This is as close to the pin as possible, with an explanation why for each spot – this is what the College Football Playoff committee has to do. With that being the case, it’s time to take a look at how the AP Poll has changed. They’ll go to Memphis this week, who is not surprisingly decent and sitting at 5-0. Alabama 11. Florida State 12. They have a week off to rest up for UCLA.
There are two comparisons here, one in how the Seminoles played and one in how they were viewed.
They didn’t typically blow out their opponents; they fought past them, often by narrow margins. And they have to go on the road to Notre Dame this week. And never really in danger. The hard slogs in the salt mines just kept coming, with the Noles sweating and toiling but regularly escaping one determined opponent after the other. Ohio State doesn’t look as strong as it did towards the end of last season, and Cardale Jones isn’t as great as I once thought he was. Pivot to the Buckeyes this year.
The only worry is if Ohio State plays like Florida State in the playoff, when the Seminoles were rolled by Oregon.
Florida State won seven of their 13 games before the playoff last season by 6 points or fewer, including one in overtime.
We can’t wait to find out.
Michigan State – Why are they our lowest-ranked Power 5 undefeated? And besides, even with its loss against Utah, Michigan has built a stronger resume than MSU. We will see where this Alabama team stands after their game this weekend against Georgia, but I still think that they are the best team in the conference. This is a flawed team, and Michigan is next. They host Penn State next week. Where conferences are tied for most teams the conference that has most overall higher ranked teams gets the nod. This is a better team than it showed against Stanford and Washington.
Cal – Hung tough with Utah, which was enough to keep them in the Top 25.
