College playoff chaos: Three of CFP top four fall in Week 11
After watching the Nos. No. 3 MI, seemingly on the way to a showdown with traditional powerhouse rival Ohio State in their regular-season finale, stumbled late Saturday night at Iowa, losing 14-13 on a last-second field goal. Clemson returned to the top tier, and is now in No. 4. “And the committee still places a high value on the head-to-head Clemson has over Louisville at this time as well”. Louisville has one more game in ACC play, but it’s against lowly Wake Forest.
“Louisville has been viewed as a very talented team”, said CFP selection committee chairman Kirby Hocutt, who also is Texas Tech’s athletic director. The three and four spots are anyone’s guess, but Clemson stays in the top four at three with Louisville locked in at four.
Wisconsin (8-2) rose one spot to No. 6 after its 48-3 thumping of IL on Saturday and Penn State (8-2) climbed three spots to No. 9 after a 45-31 win at IN, giving the Big Ten four teams IN the top nine.
Rounding out this week’s top 10 are four two-loss teams: No. 7 Wisconsin, No. 8 Penn State, No. 9 Oklahoma and No. 10 Colorado.
But the Big 12 is set up for a terrific finish, starting Saturday when the Sooners travel to West Virginia. Saturday should give the playoff committee a new way to view the Mountaineers and come Tuesday night, fans will have a better opinion of where they stand. Tennessee Volunteers (7-3) 20.
Path to the playoff: Alabama has clinched the SEC West title and a spot in the conference championship game.
The two semifinal bowl locations this season are the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl in Atlanta, Georgia, and the Fiesta Bowl in Glendale, Arizona.
Washington is a distant sixth with Oklahoma and Penn State fighting (closely at that) for the No. 7 spot.
Speaking of two-loss Big Ten teams, there are some interesting ones to keep an eye on (and the loser of the Michigan-Ohio State game figures to join this group).
While the Buckeyes and Wolverines will get a big win on the penultimate weekend, the Big Ten situation is far from settled. Ohio State (9-1) 3. 2, 3 and 4 teams in the AP Top 25 all lost on the same weekend.
Southern California’s Darreus Rogers (1) celebrates his touchdown against Washington in the first half of an NCAA college football game Saturday, Nov. 12, 2016, in Seattle. No. 4 Clemson Tigers in a rematch of last year’s championship game, and No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes vs.
Jumping to the No. 2 spot in the poll is Ohio State. Clemson lost in a similar manner to Pittsburgh. The hated rivals face off on November 26.
