Collins calls for improved mental health access at Augusta awards ceremony

“How many more reminders do we need that mental health has to be a high priority?” asked Renee Binder, president of the American Psychiatric Association, which coauthored a letter to leaders of the House of Representatives, where several mental health bills have been introduced. “This is an American issue”. She supported assembly bill 1040, which will allow family members of troubled gun owners to report them, and have authorities remove their firearms, and believes the bill may also reduce the number of suicides in California. Most of these lost lives are not, as commonly assumed, suicides; they result from illnesses like heart disease or diabetes, which are preventable, or at least manageable.

But most of us, famous or not, should also count ourselves relatively fortunate that those harrowing experiences will pass and rarely or never return. He co-authored Proposition 63 – the California Mental Health Services Act – which provides more than $1 billion annually for mental health care, and SB 946, which ensures insurance companies cover treatment of children with autism and related disorders.
